WD40 Match Report
"Looking good and dressing well is a necessity. Having a purpose in life is not"
(Peter Bourne, NCC chief sponsor)
Having embraced the technological age through the successful implementation of a club website as well as proudly unveiling a high profile kit sponsorship deal there was an overwhelming sense of anti-climax as one of the most anticipated seasons in living memory got under way with a resounding defeat at the hands of the WD 40’s.
Skipper Ian Jones had little hesitation in getting first use of the immaculate looking wicket and after a laborious first hour which saw Messers Cooke, May and Traill generously give their wickets away, Tim Piper and Jon Bourne added 140 for the 5th wicket. Piper (87) fell agonisingly short of a thoroughly underserved century while Bourne, fresh from his 2007 sabbatical, hit a fluent 72 not out to help Newenden post a competitive 205 – 4.
Following a fantastic season opener of tea from his mother Joy, Karl Rummery opened the bowling alongside Ollie Swift who, much to Newenden’s advantage, had just completed his two week long university summer term. Both youngsters bowled with great vigour dismissing both openers in quick succession thanks to a brace of catches from Neil White. Unfortunately this brought John Newton and Nick Burge to the crease, two seasoned batsmen who have given many a Newenden bowler grief over the years. Despite an early scare from a searing Rummery bouncer the experienced duo effortlessly went about accumulating a match winning partnership as Newenden’s fielding and bowling wilted in the late evening sunshine.
Skipper Ian Jones was unavailable to comment after the game.
