Man of the Match : Dan Edwards

Legendary English writer H.G Wells once said ' If you fall down yesterday, stand up today' and after the stumble at Linton Park a couple of weeks ago we stood up loud and proud at Mersham Le Hatch on Sunday.

Knowing that only a convincing win would do, for both our league position and team morale, we did what Newenden do and put in the most-commanding of performances.

We had played an ill-tempered friendly against the same opposition last season, so there was tension in the air. It was probably not dissimilar to Rishi Sunak making a surprise appearance at Boris' upcoming leaving drinks.

The setting couldn't have been better, as we arrived at Mersham's beautiful little ground under beautiful blues skies and a hot sun. And it was seriously hot.

We had a powerful batting line-up, but were once again missing at least one bowler. We had decided to mix up the tactics and look to play to our weaker suit first, then back ourselves to chase down any target set. Fortunately, having lost the toss, Mersham opted to bat, first objective achieved.

Things didn't start too well, with Edwards opening up with two wide deliveries, they turned out to be the only bad balls he bowled all day. Browning then came on from the other end and struggled to control the new ball and Mersham had got off to a flyer sitting on 18 after the first couple.

Parr was then introduced, slightly earlier than planned, but he was quick to take control of proceedings, bowling with wonderful control as the game started to turn in our favour. Edwards then bowled their skipper, who stepped across and watched as his leg stump was removed. Their number three followed soon after, with Sloan taking a sensational caught behind standing up to Edwards.

Bradney then got in on the act, taking out their dangerous looking number 4. Parr then was reintroduced and produced a moment of magic to dismiss their big-hitter. Having nearly decapitated Morris at silly mid-on a couple of balls earlier, he smashed one back to the bowler, Parr stuck out a hand and took the most amazing reflex catch. This turned the game completely, as Mersham had little else to come in.

There was still time for Browning to return and pick up a couple of vital wickets, one assisted by a superb diving catch by Greig out on the long on boundary.

Edwards and Bradney then returned to bowl out the final six overs, which they did with aplomb, leaving Mersham with a sub-par 170-7 from their 40 overs.

After a very nice tea, a rarity these days on away days, we set about chasing down the target.

Parr and Edwards obviously had a train to catch, as they smashed 18 off the first over and had raced through to 72 from the first six overs before Edwards fell. It was a wonderful display of ball-striking, with both players smashing the ball to all parts.

Bourne then joined the party, striking a couple of crisp boundaries, which included one on the leg side, a collectors item , before being caught behind. Young Greig, making his league debut, was certainly in no mood to miss out on the fun, as he bludgeoned his way to an explosive 31, even bringing out his switch hit, which disappeared over the boundary.

Parr fell with the score at 94-3, but Greig was joined by Piper, who started slowly but then found his straps and began to find the rope at will. Greig fell late on, which saw Bellhouse take us home with Piper, reaching the target from only 22.4 overs.

It was a batting masterclass and Mersham looked shell-shocked as they left the field.

We now sit third in the table with all the big teams to play, starting with Wingham in a couple of weeks. Click on the link to see the table KVCL Division 1 Table

Still in our hands, all to play for.
