Man of the Match - Dan Edwards
We have become accustomed to receiving complaints when we play cricket, and yesterday was no exception. We received a charming tirade from Dave Wheeler after the ball had landed on his balcony, we received a chorus of disapproval when it was considered that Blake Rouse was bowling too fast at one of their youngsters, we even were told that we should be bowling off two paces to give their batsmen a chance.
These are all pretty standard grievances at the NCG, but yesterday I received one that caught me completely off-guard. Their captain approached me after the game and said that one of the Newenden dogs had just urinated on his child. I am pretty well drilled in dealing with most issues raised but this one left me well and truly stumped.
I can only think that the dog in question was making his own statement on the standard of cricket on show.
The cricket may not have been up to much but the day was a triumph. There is nothing better than a day in the sunshine at the NCG.
We had expected a competitive friendly with Headcorn, as they are a team on the rise in the league, but they were unable to get several of their regulars out, so credit to them for honouring the fixture and being a thoroughly decent bunch.
Having lost the toss, we were asked to bat and we got off to a flyer, with Morris and Edwards racing through to 100 from the first ten overs, before Morris retired to protect his average. This brought new wunderkind, Jack Greig to the crease, hot on the back of his debut century in the midweek game. Unfortunately he was unable to emulate his earlier form and was sent back two balls later, having been clean bowled by Headcorn's promising youngster.
Edwards continued to make hay as the scored rattled along. He was ably supported by the other batsmen, with notable cameos from Jasper Piper, Barney Hall, Giles Thorbek and Chris Thomson-Frost. Edwards himself retired once he had reached his century. This left Finn Piper to smash 40 off the final four overs, leaving us on an imposing 305 from our 35 overs.
Now for the tea, well this one will live long in the memory, not only for the quality of the fayre on offer, but for the concept and execution. Jasper and Patch (and their flatmate Ellen) had really pulled out all the stops to lay on a proper tea experience. The gastronomic journey began outside at the BBQ, where we picked up two skewers, one marinated chicken and one grilled halloumi with peppers. We then ventured back into the pavilion to pile our plates high with an array of wonderful salads, including two superb couscous creations, a gigantic bowl of dressed leaves and the most delicately cut and presented tomato platter you have ever seen. There were some delicious honey and mustard sausages, which were sublime. We then moved onto the cakes, incredible soft brownies, chocolate covered flapjacks and the most decadent of salted caramel shortcake bites. Rachel Piper had also made an absolutely exquisite lemon and peppercorn cake, which was melt in the mouth.
To top it off, housewives favourite Jasper, served the tea in little more than an apron, which certainly appeared to please a few of the visitors, but as you can see it will take more than that to get Garry's attention. Tough crowd.
The teas are getting so good, it is making it harder and harder to go out and field after the break, but we dragged our bloated carcasses out onto the pitch for the start of the Headcorn innings.
The peppercorn cake certainly seemed to have spiced up Finn Piper, who was bowling with real venom, twice extracting middle stump out of the ground in the first two overs. Smith was unlucky to not get in the act and would have been if Thomson-Frost had been able to actually lay a hand on what looked like a regulation catch, he had been fielding like a good up to that point. Bradney then joind the party, picking up a couple, before Rouse began is spell.
Bowling beautifully, he picked up two quick wickets, which brought the Headcorn youngster to the crease. Rouse's Aussie grit came to the fore, as he decided the best way for the young lad to learn was to give him a little chin music, it probably didn't help that he was only about 5 ft high. After the first delivery bounced up off his gloves into his grill, it had to be explained to Blake that this was not the first day of The Ashes. The opposition were not impressed with him, and I dashed off to make a quick call to Holly Willoughby to ask for some advice as to how to best disassociate yourself with someone.
There was still time for Jack Greig and Giles Thorbek to join in the fun, picking up the final three wickets for not very many.
It may not have been a classic match, but it was a truly memorable day and that is why we play.
Next week we return to league action against Mersham Le Hatch needing a win to stay in touch with the leaders.
