With the rain on Saturday being about as welcome as Megan Markle at Westminster Abbey, we had to pull a rabbit of the hat to ensure that our first game in division one went ahead.

With both Stone-in-Oxney's ground and the the NCG deemed unplayable, we were fortunate enough to be able to secure the use of the wonderful facilties at Rye CC at the eleventh hour.

Our arrival in the picturesque seaside town coincided with the rarest of sights, some actual sunshine, and the day was about to get a whole lot brighter.

Having won the toss, we opted to have a bat on what looked like a belter of a deck. Things started well with new opening partnership of Patel and Hamilton building a solid platform from the first ten overs, before Patel fell trying one shot too many. Hamilton followed soon after, with Browning joining him back in the hutch a few balls later. Things were looking a little precarious at 60-3.

This brought our two batting lynchpins together, Bourne and Bellhouse. The pair consolidated beautifully, with boundaries hard to come by, they accumulated runs, never allowing the Stone attack to get on top. They had taken the score through to 126 before Bellhouse holed out in the deep, as he looked to accelerate towards the end of the innings. Finn Piper joined Bourne and added some useful impetus, running like a stag, turning twos intro threes. Piper was bowled with two overs left to go, which brought Morris to the crease. Unfortunately his stay was brief as he lashed widely at his first delivery and was bowled through the gate.

The look of abject dejection on his face as he trudged off the field can only have been matched by Prince Harry when he saw the seating plan for the coronation.

There was still time for Bradney to strike some lusty late blows, which took us through to a competitive 156-6, with Bourne finishing up with a battling 34 not out.

After a cracking away tea, our second in as many weeks, we took to the field.

We knew we had to execute everything perfectly to stay in front of the eight ball. but hadn't factored in Rye's pitch being absolutely massive and our fielding unit closely resembling the cast of Dad's army. But having taken inspiration from Charlie Harker getting a good dressing down from a local on a mobility scooter, who had taken exception to his dogs (he is not alone there), we released that disability does not mean inability.

Things started so well, with Piper and Patel challenging the batsmen with every ball, as we created an intensity in the middle that was clearly unsettling the Stone openers, but then disaster struck. The batsmen hammered the ball out past square leg and Kutner set off in pursuit but within a matter of strides he started hopping about like a particularly horny hornet had made it's way into his jock strap, his groin had popped. Which was probably a first since his wedding night.

We suddenly found ourselves a man down in the field, as Kutner continued but was unable to move. We didn't allow this to dampen our spirits, if anything it galvanised us and we started to show what Newenden CC are all about. Patel struck in the next over, then Piper picked up two more in the following one, leaving Stone reeling at 28-3.

Bradney was then introduced into the attack, after a couple of tidy overs he took out their main man, with Browning pouching a high catch at deep cover. Stone then crumbled, with Bradney picking up three more wickets, one a superb reflex catch on his follow through, an incredible piece of cricket.

There was still time for one final piece of individual brilliance and a strong contender for Champagne Moment of the Season. Patel was bowling the kind of spell that Harry Potter could only dream of, he got one to lift on the batsmen, who carved it off the edge at pace down to the hapless Kutner tucked away at short third man, we all waited for the ball to go whistling past him, but no, Kutner dived to his left stuck out a mitt and took one of the most miraculous catches you will see. It proves what a combination of eight Stellas and some powerful pain killers can do to a man. Pure class.

This killed off any resistance Stone had left as we took the final two wickets to leave them 56 all out.

It was an emphatic victory that gets our league campaign up and running. Tougher tests lay ahead, starting with Egerton next weekend.
