Newenden Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Street End CC on Sun 21 Aug 2022 at 1:30pm
Newenden Cricket Club Won by 105 runs
Match report
Newenden CC 320 (Parr 154, Bellhouse 40*, Patel 29) vs. Street End CC 215 - 9 (Smith 5-50, Scott 32-3)
Man of the Match: Mike Parr
It Mark Twain who coined the phrase, "it is not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog", which was apt for Sundays centurion, and if Street End came for looking for a dogfight then they should have unleashed the pit bull rather than the poodle.
After taking our first L in three years away at Worth in the last league outing, this fixture had a lot more riding on it than it should have. We needed a victory to secure our promotion and the game started positively when once again an away team forgot to pack an umpire and we were gifted the toss and first use of the immaculate (slightly arid) facilities. With top run scorer Dan Edwards fully immersed in the delights of the Dam, Mike Parr stepped up the plate and got things off to a delicious start taking the game to the opposition and racing along at 8 an over with the ever dependable king of the high street Shags. Shaggys luck eventually ran out and from then on in it was cashing up time at Baby Gap. Parr went through the gears and put each and every bowler, and the majority of the advertising hoardings to the sword. He raced through to a sumptuous maiden 150 and was only denied his double by having to sacrifice his wicket and settle in for a quick bottle and nap time. Honorable mention to the house wives favorite Mike Bellhouse who went big late doors and despite Reubens best efforts we cruised past 300 and posted a daunting 320 off the allotted overs
It has been a wonderful feature of this season that Newenden have been the sole team in the league to provide a tea, so the Street End boy were like a fat kid with courgette cake when the Smith clan unveiled another masterpiece in cricketing cuisine.
The run chase started with a degree of optimism as Street Ends openers hit their stride and dared to dream. Both Shags and Kylie Minogue bowled with good discipline, but it was our antipodean import that struck first blood combining well with one off lover Reuben collingwood, the latter snagging a good dipping catch at mid on. Optimism quickly turned to prayer when the wickets began to fall with regularity and the middle order was exposed. A gritty 50 from the opposition number 5 the opened the door for another chapter to be written in the Gazza Smith annuals of cricketing excellence. With no real chance of toppling the total, the opposition were flummoxed and out foxed by an all too common line and length masterclass from Newendens answer to Jimmy Anderson. Aptly assisted by a couple of superb catches from golden boy Parr and olden boy Bellhouse, Gazz had two catches dropped in his last over and then found that elusive 5th wicket with the light fading to get his name rightfully back up on the clubs honors board.
Street End fell 120 runs short and there ended their title push and cemented our third promotion in three years to send the unstoppable Newenden train roaring into Division 1. With one game still to go, odds on we’ll be promoted as rightful champions after another demolition of a title rival.
Special mention to our gloveman Benny Gibbs for managing to hold it together after sleeping off his stag do during the first innings, and also thanks to our (chair)man in the South of France for sorting out a couple of jugs of ale for Christian to demolish as we celebrated in the Hart.
Good work all round.
