Worth CC v Newenden Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 07 Aug 2022 at 1:30pm
Newenden Cricket Club Lost by 21 runs
Match report
Date : 07/08/2020
Venue : Worth CC
Result : Worth won by 21 runs ( Worth 246, Bradney 4-44, Bellhouse 2-30, Patel 2-37, Newenden 225 All Out, Edwards 66, Bellhouse 50)
Man of the Match : Harry Bradney
As Geoffrey Chaucer once wrote 'All good things must come to an end' and this was the case yesterday as we finally lost our unbeaten league record which stretches back three years and 28 games.
Just as in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, we set off on our pilgrimage to Canterbury and perhaps we too should have stopped off at the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket, as after witnessing yesterday's performance I think we could have done with a little divine intervention.
Having lost the toss and being put into the field things started steadily enough with Patel picking up one of their openers early on, but this seemed to ignite his partner who began one of the streakiest innings on record. In fact I haven't witnessed that level of streakiness, since I enjoyed a streaky bacon sandwich whilst streaking through Streaky Bay in South Australia during a particularly hot streak.
He was swinging and swinging hard, with the majority of his runs coming from sizeable edges down to the third man boundary. Whatever field we set he seemed to find the gap. We finally made the breakthrough with Bellhouse trapping him LBW. Patel then struck in his final over leaving Worth 108-3. The batsmen continued to attack and the runs were coming at a rate. Stone bowled nicely for his wicket, but it was Bradney who came on to clean up the tail, finishing up with 4-44, which included an electric stumping by Sloan. Worth ended up posting a very decent 246.
Our chase started badly, with Patel being caught second ball. Edwards seemed unphased as he started to dispatch the balls to all parts, before being dropped, which proved to be costly as he raced through to his half century. Bourne came and went, but Bellhouse and Edwards were looking in full control as we cruised past 100 from the first sixteen overs, before Edwards mistimed one and this time the catch was taken. Morris played a a couple of nice shots but was undone by a slower one, which brought Sloan to the crease to join the set Bellhouse.
The pair steadied the ship, before the turning point of the game as Bellhouse was run out by a direct hit following a mix-up. The lower order were left with too much to do, with the run rate rising they were forced to take risks with there being three further run outs, including Kutner, who decided to go for a wander after a wide had been called, the keeper spotted his error and threw down the stumps. Kutner returned to the hutch saying he didn't know he could be run out from a wide, well he certainly does now.
A late surge by Scott gave us a little hope but it was all to no avail as we fell 21 runs short with nine balls remaining. It was a devasting blow that left everyone utterly dejected, it must be as close as you can get to experiencing what a night out with Finn Piper must be like.
Losing is a bitter pill to take but this will only strengthen our resolve to win our final two games and secure the league title.
I must add that the game was played in a wonderful spirit and all credit to Worth, they were the better team on the day. Well done boys.
We return to friendly action next Sunday where we take on our noisy neighbours Northiam.
