Result : Newenden won by 18 runs ( Newenden 204 all out, Bellhouse 38, Edwards 36, Patel 30, Holborough Anchorians 186 all out, Bellhouse 2-5, Patel 2-38)
Man of the Match : Mike Bellhouse
Moliere once said 'The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it.' and we came up against a pretty sizeable obstacle on Sunday that we just managed to overcome.
The first problem we had to overcome was actually finding the ground, as the postcode we were given took us to a rundown cul-de-sac in the arse end of Snodland. In all honesty, having now visited Snodland, it appears to be mainly arse, so it would be hard to differentiate between the areas.
When we eventually found the ground, it was a surprisingly picturesque field, tucked away amongst a glade of trees. We quickly did the toss, which we won and opted to bat.
Things started well with Edwards and Patel racing through to 49 before Edwards was caught off their opener who was bowling pretty sharply. Bourne was welcomed to the crease with a barrage of chin music which he negotiated well before Patel was caught behind, leaving us on 72-2 after 11 overs.
The returning Browning, did not spend long at he crease as he chipped up a catch to midwicket. Bellhouse and Bourne then started to consolidate our position, playing some superb shots, which included the shot of the day as Bourne drove their quick straight back past him all the way to the boundary, it was a text book stroke, which funnily enough was something that Bourne was renowned for in the dormitory during his prep school days.
The pair looked in no trouble as they had taken us through to 128 before Bourne got an unplayable delivery that stayed incredibly low. We were now looking a little wobbly at 128-4, with 20 overs still to bat. Bellhouse was next to go, snicking one to slip, then Morris followed shortly after.
The evergreen Sloan and Finn Piper, making his seasonal reappearance, knuckled down and started to build a partnership and had taken us through to 178 before Sloan was trapped lbw. Kutner came and went, which left Bradney to come to the crease and support Piper. This he did in style, defending solidly and putting the bad ball away. We had reached 204, before their opening bowler returned and was too good for Bradney and then Smith, leaving us 204 all out.
After a quick visit to the McDonalds drive thru, when in Rome and all that, we took to the field.
Finn Piper opened up, and was rustier than the key to Wittersham's trophy cabinet, with their opener dispatching him to the boundary several times. Patel was causing the batsmen all sorts of problems and soon got his reward as he bowled their number two. Piper was starting to find his rhythm and soon put a stop to their opener's shenanigans, having him caught nicely at slip by Bellhouse, shortly followed by their number four, who wasn't quite sure which end of the bat to hold.
Patel was embroiled in a titanic battle with their giant number three, who was wielding a huge piece of willow. He struck a couple of mighty sixes, but Patel came out on top as he mistimed one and was caught superbly by Browning at Long On.
Bradney had replaced Piper and was settling into his customary consistent spell, and he picked up their captain just before drinks. The game was finely balanced, with Holborough 108-5 from 20 overs.
After the break they started to come at us, with their number five taking on Bradney and pushing the score on at pace. Edwards was stemming the runs at the other end, but we needed wickets. Finally Edwards got his man, bowling him for a valiant 54, leaving them on 169-6 with ten overs to go. The game was now tighter than Maro Itoje's jock strap.
The skipper threw the ball to Kutner, knowing that he has habit to take wickets. You may recall that 80s singer Limahl sang the title song for The Neverending Story, well we have just recommissioned him to write The Neverending Over. Kutner just couldn't find his rhythm, bowling four wides, two no-balls and several legside shooters, somehow with his last ball the batsmen spooned one up and Piper took an amazing catch running in from Mid On.
Smith then replaced Edwards and added some much needed calm to proceedings. They now needed just 25 runs from the final 8 overs with three wickets in hand, the balance was very much in their favour. We knew we needed someone for the big occasion and that man was housewives favourite Mike Bellhouse. He managed to have their dangerous looking number eight caught behind by Sloan in his first over. Then Smith bowled their number ten in the next. Game on.
Their number nine still had other plans and smashed a boundary off Smith, leaving them only needing 18 runs from the final four overs, but Bellhouse had this covered. He drew a big shot from their batter, which he walloped high into the evening sky, Piper and Patel converged, with Patel taking a testing catch under supreme pressure.
Cue celebrations, as we have not had a close game like that for a long while.
It was a great game, played in a great spirit.
It was a shame for Holborough, as at times they were full of hope but ultimately ended in deflating disappointment, very much like an night out in Leeds with Finn Piper.
