Man of the Match : Jasper Piper

They say that everyday is a school day and yesterday was no exception as Kent University were taught that if cricket was a degree they would very much be on for a Desmond.
With Winchelsea crying off, we were pleased to secure a replacement game against a university side. This promised to be a far more competitive game than we have had so far this season and it certainly didn't disappoint.

We knew we were in for a game when a minibus turned up and out jumped eleven athletic twenty year olds. Having lost the toss, a now standard practice, they opted to bat. Things started well with Scott and Patel tying their openers down, before the pair combined with Patel taking a smart slip catch after Scott got one to nip away. Patel was bowling beautifully with just six runs coming from his first six overs.Their opener then started to chance his arm and was lucky not to be dismissed on several occasions, but he played some lovely shots that took them through to 77 before Bradney picked up their captain just before drinks.

A lot of runs were scored from our bowlers continually dropping it short, if fact I haven't seen so many short deliveries since I had a pygmy postman whilst on placement in the Congo basin.

Edwards came on to try and stem the flow of runs, and that he did, but owed a lot of this to Jim Piper behind the stumps. After several knee operations and various other procedures, this was Jim's first foray as a wicket keeper for well over a year, we weren't sure whether to expect Jack Russell or Willy Russell, I would say we got somewhere in the middle, let's say Kurt Russell.

The opposition started to crank up the scoring rate towards the end of their innings, which was helped by some profligate fielding, especially in spilling at least five catches, put it this way you would have seen less spillage from a blind man pouring pints on a pogo stick. Balfour and Kutner came on to finish things up and bowled some decent deliveries, sharing five wickets between them. A couple of tight overs at the end meant that we kept the score down to 196-8 from their 40 overs.

We were treated to a splendid tea from our new club superwoman Sophie James, who stepped up after the original tea provider was taken down by a mystery bug that you find in red wine. Sophie managed to find enough time to put the score book down and prep everything. We were treated to an array of wonderful cakes and treats that both sides devoured gratefully. Though I feel a couple of pot noodles and a Fray Bentos may have been a nice touch to make the students feel a little more at home.

Our chase started well, with Edwards and Morris hitting a few early boundaries before the latter holed out in the fourth over. Edwards continued the onslaught, and had taken the score through to 50 before there was a controversial moment. The opposition were certain he had snicked off behind, but the umpire was unmoved. On recent form Edwards is about as keen to walk as Pavarotti after a lock in at a pizza parlour.

He was caught just a couple of overs later, which brought Jasper Piper to the crease to join Bourne. Piper's season is following an unusual pattern, golden duck, 116*, golden duck, 83*, very much famine or feast. Fortunately for us it was very much feast yesterday. After a nervy first over he settled into things and the pair played beautifully putting on 142 for the third wicket. Bourne is having the season of his life, having already scored nearly 500 runs by the start of June.

There was still time for Patel to march out and smash his third ball straight back past the bowler to take us home with five overs to spare.

It was a great game played between two strong sides and will set us up well for the league game with Smarden on Sunday, which will also include the famous Bradney tea.

Hopefully see you all there.
