Aristotle once said 'We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit' and yesterday saw Newenden get very much back in the habit with an emphatic win against Elham Valley.
Having previously dismantled the same opposition in a rearranged fixture only three weeks ago, Elham Valley must have been looking forward to the trip to Newenden as much as an invitation to a Michael Barrymore pool party.

Credit to them, they turned up at an immaculate NCG and gave a good account of themselves. Having now lost five in a row, tossing is fast becoming an issue, which is something I have not heard since my housemaster had a quiet word with me in the lower fourth.

Having been given the choice, the opposition opted to bat, which fitted with our plans perfectly. Their innings started well as they took on our openers with some attacking shots, taking a particular liking to Patel. Scott had other ideas though and made the breakthrough when bowling their main aggressor off the inside edge. Edwards replaced Patel at the Pavilion End and the change paid off immediately with back to back wicket maidens. The first was a thing of beauty, as Sloan stumped their number three with an electric piece of work behind the sticks. Most quick bowlers would be insulted by the keeper standing up, but Sloan is so good he has brought a whole new threat into our attack. Edwards then removed their captain when he popped up an easy chance to Morris at silly mid-on. Leaving Elham Valley rocking at 34-3.

Smith was then introduced and ripped through their middle order, picking up 4-23 from six overs. Patel returned from the Lossenham Lane end and joined the party, taking three key wickets, including a superb slip catch by Bellhouse, finishing up with 3-22. The opposition were bowled out for 124 from just 26 overs.

Our cricket teas continue to make one of the greatest comebacks since Lazarus. I am fast running out of superlatives for the standard of fair on offer. Dan Edwards and his family took things to another level. We were treated to a monster feast, which included a vast array of delicious sandwiches, my personal favourite being the rare roast beef. There were sausage rolls, pork pies and a very tasty nod to the Seventies with some excellent chicken and bacon vol-au-vents.

There was Caprese salad on a stick, which I think is a first, followed by fruit kebabs (they obviously had overbought on the skewers) and we even had strawberries dipped in chocolate, which Dan informed us were his own handy work. The cakes on offer were astounding, with homemade meringues, tray bakes and finished off with NCC branded cup cakes. A truly wonderful effort that will take a lot of beating.

Our innings was always going to be a little anticlimactic after the tea. It didn't start well. Patel was dropped first ball, then rather than putting his head down and being thankful for the reprieve, he dropped the very next ball down long-on's throat, meaning he had to traipse back to the pavilion with about as much dignity as Rebekah Vardy.

Edwards was obviously still swept away by the triumph of his strawberries as he too fell the very next over, taking an outlandish swipe at a straight one, we were suddenly 17-2 and scrabbling around to get padded up.The situation required a cool head, and there are few cooler than housewives favourite Mike Bellhouse. He took full control of the situation and made light work of chasing down the total. Batting in tandem with Browning they put away the bad ball to keep the scoreboard ticking. Bellhouse was farming the strike nicely, so much so that I hear that Amazon are considering doing a follow-up to the Clarkson series, with Chirag taking the Kaleb role, as he is very familiar with Diddly Squat.

The pair took us home with 24 overs to spare, which keeps us clear at the top of the league (Division Two league table)

We take on Kent University on Sunday which promises to be a far tighter affair.

Hope to see you all down at the NCG.
