Man of the Match : Jasper Piper
We all have good days and bad days at the office. A bad day would be if you were sitting in parliament innocently researching new tractors online and inadvertently opened a hard core pornography website, without even needing a login, in full view of your fellow MP's. A good day would be to continue your winning start to the season with another convincing victory at the NCG.
Fortunately for us, the lack of a decent WiFi router in the clubhouse would preclude our members from suffering the same fate that befell the unfortunate Neil Parish, but please rest assured that we remain extremely vigilant in monitoring any frivolous talk of farm machinery. Jonesy beware.
Yesterday saw the first of our two matches against regular sparring partner Langton Green. Having lost the toss, we were put into bat and thing started steadily before Morris fell to a good catch at cover trying to replicate the boundary stroke from the ball before. This brought Browning to the crease to join Thomson-Frost. They moved things on nicely before the latter fell to a superb catch at extra cover, leaving us on 49-2. Cometh the hour, cometh the man and yesterday that man was Jasper Piper. Fresh on the back of a golden duck in the Overs/Unders game he needed runs to get in nick before the league starts and runs he got. Batting within himself he began to accumulate runs from the off, ably supporting Browning who was looking imperious until holing out to long on for his 30. Partners then came and went, with Burns looking good for his 14, which included a near run out, where he smashed his lip on the grill of his helmet diving back to make his ground, in fact I haven't seen someone's face damaged that badly by a grill since a particularly volatile episode of Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares.
As the wickets fell at one end, Piper continued his one man resistance at the other, finally bringing up his century with three overs to spare. It as a quality knock where he showed great composure to ensure that we posted a very competitive 231 from our 40 overs.
Piper's efforts were only matched by the tea provided by NCC's answer to Heston Blumenthal, Mr Charlie Harker. Having been painstakingly close to bagging the Tea Trophy last year he really pulled out all the stops yesterday. He treated us to a superb homemade spread, including a delectable range of sandwiches such as roast chicken and bacon mayo, rare roast beef and salami & emmental. The sausage rolls made from scratch were heavenly, as were the smoked salmon blinis topped off with some caviar. A Charker tea wouldn't be a Charker tea without his famous courgette and lime cake, with this year's being the best yet. Probably his greatest achievement was that he did all this following fifteen pints on a night out in Tooting the day before, my question would not be why have a such a heavy night before such an important day, but who actually chooses to go out in Tooting? Though it would explain the last minute addition of a packet of Percy Pigs to his cakes platter.
Seemingly charged by the Percy Pigs the Langton Green reply started well, with their openers racing through to 28 off the first four overs before Bellhouse made the breakthrough trapping their opener LBW. Kutner then joined the party removing the other opener in exactly the same fashion. Kutner was bowling the kind of spell that Harry Potter could only dream of. Having gone for 24 runs off his first two overs, his next six only went for 11, which included two further wickets, which included a stunning catch by Burns at extra cover.
The wickets continued to fall at regular intervals but Langton Green were always in touch. Smith bowled well, as did Browning but it was debutant Milborne who made the key breakthrough. When I asked what he bowled, he told me slow and straight, well the eight bottles of San Miguel at tea time must have thrown off his radar badly, which actually worked to his favour, as he kept everyone guessing as to where the next delivery would go, including the batsmen. This ploy was to pay off as he took the prize scalp of their captain with a legside ball that he feathered behind to be taken superbly by the returning Charlie Sloan. It was not only a pleasure to see Charlie on electric form behind the stumps but to have him back out on the field. Welcome back Chairman.
We then took the final few wickets without too many scares, we held some outstanding catches and fielded brilliantly, with Thomson-Frost being exemplary.
It was a great game and very useful warm-up before the season starts in earnest next week with our first league game against Brookland.
I would also like to take the chance to welcome and thank Giles Moffatt and Sophie James to the club, who are going to help with umpiring and scoring respectively. They both did a splendid job yesterday.
