NEWENDEN WIN THE LEAGUE
History was made at the NCG on Sunday as Newenden were crowned league champions for the very first time.
The omens were good as we arrived at the ground in glorious sunshine, the NCG had never looked better, with Guy providing us with a pitch to match the occasion.
Missing a few of our regulars due to Covid, hockey, holidays, last minute injury and a day out with the kids (must have been a good one!) we fielded a new-looking side, where the whole was very much greater than the sum of it's parts. We have found over the years that when we have to pull together as a side and not rely on our star players to produce, we always come through and today was to be no different.
Having won the toss, we opted to bowl so that we could assert some control on the game, though I am not sure the rest of the team saw it that way, as they faced a long stint in the hot sun. Walmer started well, with their openers taking a particular liking to Finn Piper and had cruised through to 40 for no loss off the first ten overs. Bellhouse was bowling with good control from the Top End and finally got his man, after he mistimed a pull to Morris at short mid wicket.
Smith had come on at the Pavilion End and knew the importance of his spell in the context of the game. He soon hit his rhythm and the runs began to dry up. Then came the turning point in their innings, as Smith trapped their number three LBW then snared their next man in the same fashion with his very next ball. He was unable to secure the hat trick but Walmer were now wobbling at 61-3.
Smith then took a sharp caught and bowled finishing up with superb figures of 3-25 from his nine overs.
Bradney had replaced Bellhouse at the Top End and was causing the batsmen all sorts of problems but not getting a reward. By this point their opener was well set and their number six came in and started playing some shots. He took on one shot too many though and holed out to cow corner where Cottrell was waiting in the shadows and took the catch comfortably.
Buoyed by his catch Cottrell now came onto bowl and what a spell it turned out to be. He ripped through their tail and then finished off the valiant effort from their opener, having him caught behind by Hall. Cottrell bagged up figures of 4-10 off 2.3 overs, not too shabby. Walmer had posted a competitive yet very getable 155.
The Newenden response started well, with Belhouse and Harker looking calm and composed, as they took the score through to 57 from the first nine overs. Harker was then trapped LBW, which brought Browning to the crease. He obviously wanted to get home to watch the test match, as he set about the Walmer bowling with gay abandon, smashing the ball to all parts, including into a passing kayak.
Browing fell with the score at 153-2, which meant Finn Piper finally made a contribution to the day as he hit the winning runs. Cue the celebrations.
It has been a wonderful effort from the whole squad, and a great achievement for the smallest village in Kent to secure two consecutive promotions in the league. We now move up to Division Two where we hope to make it a hat trick.
Well done boys.
