Match report CHARLIE'S ANGELS REACH SEVENTH HEAVEN

Yesterday saw us host the third Newenden Sixes tournament and it was certainly the best yet.

Five teams competed for the coveted trophy, which included Rolvenden Rampage, Northiam No-Marks, Castle Hill Cockerels, Newenden Noise and Charlie's Angels (Newenden's other side).

For those bible readers amongst us, you will be familiar with Matthew, chapter 5, verse 30 ' If your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into Horsmonden' and this was very much the case yesterday with Horsmonden pulling out of the competition at the last minute, a pitiful performance.

Staying with the biblical references, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as we stumbled over a far better format that we will now adopt for all future competitions. So praise the lord for Horsmonden's ineptitude.

All five teams would now play each other in a round robin format with the top two contesting the final.

We were treated to some fantastic encounters, with the ball often getting the better of the bat in the early stages, well all apart from one over from the hapless Fred Smith, who went for 39 runs from his six balls in the first match and was promptly switched to spend the rest of the competition behind the stumps.

It was nip and tuck until the final game of the first phase, with four teams still in with a shout of reaching the final, with Newenden Noise needing the yet unbeaten Charlie's Angels to do them a favour by beating the Castle Hill Cockerels and set up an all Newenden final. The Angles duly obliged, which left the Noise, the No-Marks and the Cockerels all on 9 points, with the Noise securing their place in the final courtesy of having lost fewer wickets in the group stage.

The final certainly didn't disappoint with Charlie's Angels posting the highest score of the day, 73 runs, with skipper Jasper Piper and Giles Thorbek leading the charge. The Noise came out of the traps well, with Ben Browning playing a captain's innings before retiring for an impressive 35. It all came down to the last over, with the Noise needing 18 to win. Finn Piper stepped up and promptly bowled a wide, then Chatterton sliced him for four, then another wide. Suddenly the pendulum had swung and the Noise were in the ascendancy, needing just 8 runs from 4 balls. Finn then took things up a notch, bowling two dot balls, then a wide, then a wicket. This brought Charlie Harker to the crease to face the final delivery with a vey clear task, only a boundary would do, a four to tie and set up a super over, and a six to win it. The tension was palpable but he had an air of confidence as he put down his gin and tonic and strode to the wicket. Unfortunately this confidence was greatly misplaced and he was duly clean bowled. Charlie's Angels had won the title having won all five of their games.

They picked up the sparkly new trophy, with Christian Thompson-Frost winning player of the tournament. The Rolvenden Rampage picked up the 'Golden Turd' for finishing last.

I would like to thank everyone who helped out to make the day such a success. Firstly to the the umpires, Mick, Martin, Al and Giles who did a cracking job. Then to Ingrid and Ake who kept us all well lubricated throughout the day, with their superb work behind the bar, which included Ingrid's speciality G&T's, which I noted our umpire Giles took a particular liking to. Garry Smith for his tireless work on the BBQ, those burgers get better each time Gazz. But I must make an especially big thank you our man on the decks Mr Alex Balfour for what was a stupendous effort on creating such a great atmosphere throughout the day. I loved the idea of the captain that loses the toss being able to select which musical genre was played throughout the match. Old School Hip Hop being my particular favourite.

It was a cracking day enjoyed by one and all, and the third stage of the historic quadruple is now secured. Just the league title to go next Sunday.
