Newenden Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Semi Final on Wed 15 Jun 2022 at 6:00pm
Newenden Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report In the immortal words of Hannibal from the A-Team ' I love it when a plan comes together'. Well yesterday everything came together like clockwork as we produced the near perfect performance to dispatch Northiam in the semi-final of the Wealden Wallop.

With the evening sun beating down on an absolutely immaculate NCG (thank you Guy, you have taken things to new levels this year) the scene was set for a great game. We knew we could not take anything for granted as Northiam were the reigning champions and they had no intention of handing over the trophy lightly.

Northiam won the toss and decided to bat, which suited us just fine, as we are rapidly becoming experts at chasing, mainly due to my inability to win a toss.

Things couldn't have started better with Jones Snr taking two wickets in the first over. Northiam then put on 46 for the next wicket, with old NCC man Matt Cooke the main aggressor, before he holed out to Edwards. Scott then followed up with another wicket four balls later, clean bowling their number five with an absolute beauty, gave him a decent send off too.

Mike 'Baby Gap' Parr was then brought into the attack and what a difference he made. Drying up the runs and taking the key wicket of their set batsmen, following a sharp stumping from Gibbs. He ended up with 1-14 from his four overs. Northiam bat deep, so we knew we had to keep the pressure on. The ball was thrown to Bates, who bowled two superb containing overs at a crucial time. Northiam were now 105-5 from 15 overs.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man and yesterday he came in a big way. I give you Mr Christian Kutner. Introduced to bowl the death overs, he was like a man possessed, the Northiam batsmen didn't know if they were coming or going, he was sending them back at such a rate I hear that Priti Patel wants to act as a consultant on her Rwanda project.

He finished up with 4-9 from three overs, leaving Northiam with a below-par 129 from their allocation.

We still had to get the runs and things started badly as our resident run machine Bourne was caught behind in the first over without troubling the scorer. This brought Baby Gap Parr to the crease to join Edwards. Obviously inspired by the events at Trent Bridge on Tuesday, the pair started to dismantle the Northiam attack. Both batsmen were playing well within themselves, punishing the bad ball and running like stags between the wickets. They had taken the score through to 81 before Parr popped one up to the bowler, for a superb 42.

Gibbs then came out and maintained the momentum, before Edwards could restrain himself no longer and pulled out the switch hit and got himself bowled in the process, not before he had got his half-century.Gibbs then fell shortly afterwards, leaving us on 123-4. Scott and Jones Jnr then took us home with five overs to spare.

It was a clinical performance from a well oiled winning machine.

Now to the final, which will take place at Tenterden's lovely ground on Wednesday, July 6th, hope we can get a good crowd down to cheer us home.
