Man of the Match : Kyle Scott

With our original opponents Brookland crying off at the eleventh hour, we managed to secure an emergency fixture with Elham Valley, another team from our division in the Kent Village League.

Conditions were perfect as a strong Newenden side arrived at their beautiful ground, set amongst the rolling fields surrounding Canterbury. We were hoping for a competitive game to give us an idea of how we will fare in the new division. On the evidence of yesterday, I would say rather well.

Things started badly for Elham Valley and got steadily worse. Having won the toss, without hesitation, their captain decided to bat. This proved to be a poor decision, in fact as decisions go, it was right up there with Sir Keir Starmer saying ' Yeah, I'd love to pop over, I could kill a curry and a pint'.

This gave us the chance to have a proper look at our newest import, Kyle Scott, fresh off the plane from Australia. He began a beautiful spell of quick bowling, hitting tight lines and getting the ball to nip about off the seam. He soon picked up his first wicket, trapping their captain LBW. Bellhouse was tying up the other end with his constricting spin and was unlucky not to have picked up an early wicket following a drop in the slips. Scott then got his second scalp, with their number three driving it straight to Burns at mid-off. We then experienced a period that could only be described as cricketing driftwood, as their opener embarked on one of the most tedious vigils at the crease in recent memory. I think he was being sponsored by the balls faced rather then runs scored. It was one of the most boring innings any man should have to endure, safe to say a dirty weekend in Hull with Theresa May would be more appealing than having to watch that knock again, well that is according to Bellhouse anyway.

Bradney came close to dislodging him, taking the edge several times, but we finally managed to break the partnership after a superb pick up and throw from Edwards led to a run out, leaving Elham on 90-3 after 28 overs. There was still time for Smith to pick up a couple of late wickets with his customary consistency. Kyle Scott then returned to bowl the final couple of overs to complete a superb debut, finishing up with 2-25 from his nine overs. If Kyle continues like this, I would confidently predict that if you were to stick an 'i' in his first name and get him to bang out the chorus of 'I should be so lucky' he would be soon be the most popular Australian import since the 1980s.

At the break Elham Valley had crept through to 145-5 from their allocation.

Our reply didn't start well, with Morris falling cheaply, being bowled by the first straight delivery on the innings. Edwards then decided to try and win the game within a few overs but fell for an eye-catching 32 attempting one shot too many. Browning then joined Bourne at the crease and the two set about knocking off the total. Browing finished up on 47 not out, after being dropped five times. To say that the Elham Valley fielding was poor would be an understatement. I think there would be more chance of Boris Becker becoming an Independent Financial Advisor than them holding a catch in the deep.

We reached our target with 22 overs to spare.

I am sure that tougher tests lie ahead (well I bloody hope so) but it was a beautiful day out at a beautiful ground.

Next week we take on Staplehurst in the league, should be a very different proposition.
