Man of the Match : Dan Edwards

After the late withdrawal of Winchelsea we managed to secure a game against our old and regular rivals Langton Green. We always have tight matches with these boys and this one was to prove no different.

Guy had worked tirelessly throughout the week to get the NCG looking absolutely magnificent, it nevers ceases to amaze how he can get it from looking like a paddy field to a bowling green in a matter of days.

If it looks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, it probably is a duck, and this was very much the story of the day on Sunday. The pond on the ground may have gone, but the ducks were certainly there in numbers. Ten of them to be precise (between both sides not just Newenden). As you can imagine this lead to it being a low scoring affair, but often those sort of games turn out to be the most exciting, and this one didn't disappoint.

Having lost the toss and being put into bat, things started badly with Thomson-Frost (duck) having his stumps rearranged in the second over. He was closely followed by Morris (duck), who holed out to mid on as the frustration of some very tight bowling got too much. The score was now 7-2. Olly Burns, on debut, was looking composed amongst the chaos, playing some classy looking strokes to add a little calmness to proceedings. Unfortunately the calm was short lived as Jasper Piper (duck) popped one up to cover, followed by Hills(duck) being bowled next ball. To say things were looking shaky at 20-4 from 7 overs was perhaps an understatement. Enter Bellhouse, he started to stroke the ball around as if he was playing a different game, and he and Burns had taken us through to 50 before the latter fell when looking set.

Edwards joined Bellhouse and read the situation well, playing within himself for a change, so much so that his sister came up to me and asked how long had he been in for, to which I replied ten overs, and she said he never usually bats that long.Obviously a a keen student of Dan's game. The pair had taken us through to 78-5 at the drinks break without any further scares and things were certainly looking up.

Unfortunately, they soon took a turn for the worse, with Bellhouse spooning up a simple catch the following over. This lead to Edwards going through the gears a little, sticking one in the pub car park and one in the river, which was salvaged by a passing paddle boarder. Will Hinshelwood, also on debut, played a nice little cameo before being bowled by the wily Field, who must be one of the slowest bowlers on the circuit, but very much works on the old adage of ' you miss, I hit' and on Sunday we certainly liked to miss. Edwards was to follow soon after with the team wobbling at 104 -8 with ten overs left.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man and that man was Rufus Cottrell, he swaggered to crease with the air of a man that very much said ' leave this to me lads'. He started to smash their bowlers to all parts, combining power with some glorious cricket strokes. Promotion up the order certainly beckons. Sam Holroyd(duck) supported him well, as the pair put on 30 odd before Holroyd fell, then Smith joined Cottrell and took us through to 149 before Cottrell finally fell for a valiant 40.

We now had something to bowl at and that is exactly we did. Edwards was bowling like a man possessed from the Lossenham Lane end and clean bowled their, 2,3,4 (all ducks) in the space of two overs. Smith was not going to miss out either, picking up two wickets (ducks), both caught safely by Thomson-Frost at deepish mid off.

Langton Green were reeling at 10-5. Then the game started to turn. Their number 7 could bat and their opening bat was settling in for the long haul. They started to slowly accumulate runs, knowing that if they could bat the overs out they would win the game. We put down a couple of tough chances and had a very good LBW appeal turned down, but we can only credit the batsmen with their application and concentration. Cottrell bowled his customary reliable spell and was unlucky not to get a greater return, as was Bellhouse, who was getting some serious turn from the Pavilion End.

The pair had taken them through to 120, before Jasper Piper finally made the breakthrough, trapping their danger man LBW, this was closely followed by Cottrell doing the same to the next bat. Game on. We needed three wickets from the last five overs and they need 20 runs. We had one last roll of the dice and Edwards came back on to bowl his last over, but it was not to be as they picked up a couple of useful boundaries to take them home with ten balls to spare.

It is never enjoyable to lose, but it was a fun game to play.

We are already lining up a decider later in the season with the series tied at 1-1.

We now turn our attentions to the league once again as we welcome Charing on Sunday.
