Man of the Match : Jasper Piper

After a few weeks splashing around in sub-zero temperatures, the sunshine was back and so were 12 point Sundays. We travelled to the not so Great Chart, technically our third league game of the season (Kingsnorth having been saved by the wet stuff) without our inspirational leader, who via satellite link managed to pipe through instructions whilst manning a birthday BBQ…big up Ricky Gould.

Another lovely ground that promised a decent days cricket, and when we were thrust confidently into bat and lost the house wife’s favourite Mike Bellhouse in the third over, followed by Jones Snr and debutant Ben Gibbs in quick succession, the home team were buoyant. Rumours of our demise were greatly exaggerated however, and the Piper/Bourne axis clawed us past 100, and then slipped seamlessly into overdrive when Collingwood replaced Bourne at the crease and the two of them unleashed hell. The attack was limited, but the deck was shoddy and the two of them set to their work like consummate professionals, carving fours and bludgeoning sixes as the opposition chased long shadows and oversaw a 150 partnership taking the NCC to 258/5 off their allocation.
Having been forewarned at the toss that they were a “bowling side”, we hit the Milk House app at the tea break to get Jaspers G&T jug prepped, before setting about the opposition like Waterhouse on a lamb bhuna. After a subdued effort with the bat, Dan Edwards took little time making his presence felt with the ball, and with steady support from Bradney at the other end, took apart their top order and looked sharp ahead of his full England debut this week. The craft of Jones Snr dismantled their middle order and prompted their very chilled number six to drop kick his leg stump (his off stump having already been dispatched) and signaled the beginning of the end of this contest. After Collingwood ruthlessly dismissed some children, it was left for Barney Hall to wrap things up with a caught and bowled that had the crowd purring.

A solid 202 run victory has taken the club back to the summit of Division 3 (click on link below to see full table) and we welcome a return to the NCG in our next fixture against the mighty Charing in a couple of weeks time.
