Man of the Match : Jasper Piper
That's how you do it. Newenden began their league campaign in emphatic style with a convincing victory of Mersham.
It was important that we put down a marker to the rest of the division and that is exactly what we did.
Having won the toss, we opted to bat. We started solidly against a relatively benign attack, pushing through to 21 from the first four overs before Morris fell softly, mistiming a short pitched delivery straight to point. Patel was then joined by Bourne, the pair took the score through to 40 before Patel fell trying one shot too many on a track that was showing signs of variable bounce. Browning then nicked off without troubling the scorers and we were in a little trouble at 41-3. Cometh the hour, cometh man and that man was Jasper Piper. Following a lively night in Paddock Wood (which is somewhat of an anomaly) he arrived a little worse for wear, but this only galvanised him for the job in hand.
Bourne and Piper started to consoldiate our position, steadily accumulating from every over. The pair had put on 118 in the 20 overs before Piper finally fell for a valliant 57, his third half century from the first four games of the season. Bourne was still going strong at the other end, and soon settled into another solid partnership with Bellhouse. After a bat change, the latter started to show us his array of shots, including a flicked six off his pads which nearly wiped out the club tuck shop. Bellhouse feel in the final over but not before he and Bourne had seen us through to an imposing total of 235-5 from our 40 overs.
After a swift bite to eat under the gazebo, we took to the field to finish the job. The return of Rummery was a joy to behold as he hit his rhythm and started to cause their openers all kinds of trouble. Patel was working his magic from the other end, bowling a mesmeric spell that would yield 2-11 from his nine overs. Patel made the first breakthrough, clean bowling their opener, then repeated the feat with their number three. The other opener was living a charmed life, having been put down twice off tricky chances at mid off. His luck was to run out when he picked out Piper at cover off Bradney. The wickets continued to fall, with Bradney picking up three to put down an early benchmark for the league bowling competition. The pick of his wickets came courtesy of another piece of sublime fielding from Piper. The ball had been smashed uppishly through the cover region, most of us would have just turned and trotted off to collect it from the boundary rope, but Piper moved swiftly to his right, stuck out a mitt and pouched a superb one handed catch. The batsmen just stood in disbelief.
Any spirit that the opposition had left dissipated in that moment. Jones had replaced Patel and was soon amongst the wickets. He was bowling beautifully as he picked up 4-13 from his spell, which left enough time for Smith to chip in with a scalp of his own, after Browning had taken a steepler at mid on.
Mersham finished up on 81 All Out,
It was a cracking first game and we know that stiffer tasks lay ahead, but we will take each game as it comes starting with Kingsnorth at home in two weeks.
