Newenden Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Castle Hill CC on Sun 25 Apr 2021 at 1.30pm
Newenden Cricket Club Won by 49 runs
Match report
It was a weekend of contrasting fortunes. After being comprehensively beaten by a decent Marden team on the Saturday, we in turn recorded our second comfortable win on a Sunday.
There were a few high points from the Marden game, which included a superb fourth wicket partnership of 123 between Jim and Jasper Piper (no relation) and an impressive spell from Harry Bradney, but it was one of those days were we just didn't turn up. I put it down to the weather, we are used to the balmy climes of Newenden and were not ready for biting winds blowing in across the open expanses of Marden.
We have never been a team to dwell on failure, we were just grateful that we had a game the very next day to put things right, and that is what we did.
Newenden were put into bat and we soon found ourselves one down, with Collingwood returning to the hutch without troubling the scorer. This brought about the momentous return of Jonathan Bourne, after a two year hiatus focusing on good works in the village, culminating in overseeing the community work party that was responsible for the magnificent Newenden bus shelter. It was as if he had never been away, as he soon settled into his innings, with some signature punches through the covers, sprinkled with a few crisp boundaries square of the wicket. Morris and Bourne put on 30 odd before the former was caught at cover, which lead to Jasper Piper coming to the middle. He added some of his usual hustle and bustle before being run out whilst trying to sneak a quick single.
We were now 55-3 and needed someone to step up, and that man was Patel. He swaggered to the crease on the back of a ton the previous day and got stuck straight into the amicable Castle Hill attack. He was depositing the ball to all parts and the score was racing along. Bourne was anchoring the innings beautifully and the pair had put on nearly 100 before Patel was bowled for a swashbuckling 58. Harker chipped in with some useful runs, displaying his full array of shots (normally to the wrong balls) before Bourne brought up his half-century. Julian Bradney showed great tenacity in supporting Bourne and then Cottrell finished the innings off with a hefty blow into Lossenham Lane. The Newenden innings ending on 198-8.
The Castle Hill response didn't start well, with Cottrell clean bowling their opener in the first over. Smith was settling into his work beautifully from the Pavilion End, picking up their danger man cheaply, then bowling their number four before finishing off his spell by capturing their other opener, with Patel pouching a tidy catch in the deep after the batsman had attempted the same shot once too often.
Cottrell had finished his now customary tidy opening spell which brought Bradney into the attack. Following on from his efforts at Marden, he was soon causing the opposition all kinds of trouble. Collingwood had replaced Smith and was soon rewarded for his efforts with a couple of wickets. Up stepped Bradney, who bagged three quick wickets, which also included one of the worst hat trick balls on record. He finished with figures of 3-17 from his seven overs.
There was still time for debutant Sam Holroyd (a product of the might Newenden Nomads hockey club) to take his first club wicket. Which left Castle Hill 49 runs short of their target.
It was another great day at the NCG.
It is down to serious business this weekend as we start our league campaign away at Mersham. Can't wait.
