Newenden Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Goudhurst CC on Sun 18 Apr 2021 at 1.30pm
Newenden Cricket Club Won by 9 runs
Match report
Match : Newenden v Goudhurst Gentlemen
Date : 18th April 2021
Venue : NCG
Result : Newenden won by 9 runs (Newenden 242, Jasper Piper 53*, Jim Piper 50*, Chris Thomson-Frost 50. Goudhurst 233, Patch Boland 3-39, Jasper Piper 2-33)
Man of the Match : Jim Piper
It was a sight to behold this weekend, as the NCG hosted a carnival of cricket to kick off the 2021 season. The ground looked absolutely magnificent, how Guy has managed to get it looking so perfect so early in the season is testament to his skills and dedication, this is bearing in mind we had snow on the Monday and the outfield would have been more suitable for a rice harvest throughout the whole of March. Thank you Guy.
Friday saw our now annual season opener of the Over 25s v Under 25s, it was a tight and competitive affair, with two quality sides going toe to toe. In the end the Overs somehow managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, meaning the young whippersnappers have now leveled the series at one a piece. It felt very much like Ruiz Jnr turning over Anthony Joshua and an immediate rematch has been set for the end of the season. It was a cracking game followed by a superb night over at the White Hart, it certainly felt good to be back playing and being amongst friends again.
After the festivities of Friday, Sunday saw the return of a more traditional style of cricket, with the arrival of the Goudhurst Gentlemen.
Having won the toss Newenden set about posting an intimidating target, Morris and Thomson-Frost were rattling along at a good pace before the former fell for 29 going for a shot too many with the score on 69-1. Jim Piper came to the crease and looked in total control, as he started to deposit the ball to all parts. He put on nearly hundred with Thomson-Frost, before retiring at 50 to protect his average. Thomson-Frost was to do the same only a few balls later. This meant we had two new bats at the crease, Hills and Jasper Piper. They continued to strengthen our position and we passed the 200 mark with 10 overs to spare. Then came the wobble, Hills went first, then Durtnell, Gilmour, Smith, Bradney and Boland came and went without using up too much of the scorer's pencil lead. Boland recording the first golden duck of the season. It still left time for Jasper Piper to complete his 50 before the final wicket fell, with the team finishing on a very decent 242-7.
Goudhurst started tentatively, with one of their openers being dropped early on, but they began to grow in confidence. They looked untroubled until Jim Piper took a superb catch, diving forward at point off Smith. Bradney was bowling with his usual rhythm and accuracy, and Cottrell, on debut looks like a very useful acquisition, troubling the Goudhurst batsmen with his extra pace. Boland was brought on and immediately made a breakthrough, having their number three caught smartly at mid wicket. The next wicket fell after some very sharp fielding from Cottrell down at fine leg. Picking up the ball and unleashing an unstoppable throw that smashed down the stumps leaving their batsmen well short. This galvanised the side and we started picking up regular wickets. Boland picked up their other opener, following a good catch from Bradney, then Gilmour joined the party accounting for their big-hitting number six with Jasper Piper pouching him in the deep.
Goudhurst then started to fightback, taking on our bowlers and suddenly our target didn't look so daunting. Bradney and Cottrell were brought back and did a great job containing their batsmen. The moment of the match came, when Boland ran out their danger man, with an amazing shy at one stump from deep square leg, who said he couldn't field?
Jasper Piper came back on and picked up the final two wickets, which left Goudhurst just nine runs short of our total.
It was a great game, played in a wonderful spirit.
The cricket keeps on coming. Next week we have a double header, away against Marden 1's on the Saturday then home to Castle Hill on the Sunday.
Go the mighty NCC.
