Sunday saw a bumper crowd treated to a cracking game of cricket. The sun was shining, the ground looked magnificent and the players were in the mood.

This was the second match we have played to remember our old friend and umpire Trevor Hills and it did not disappoint. It is played against my old Biddenden side, where many of us played with Trev some years ago.

The format is a great leveler, with 30 overs per side and every player having to bowl a minimum of 1 over.

Smith won the toss for Newenden and decided to bat.Things started badly, with Harker being dismissed by Omar folloiwng a sensational catch in the gully. Atherton (that is Digby not Mike) fell to the same bowler in his next over leaving the home side teetering at 15-2. Browning and Spry played some attractive shots before both being dismissed in consecutive overs by Trev's grandson, young Nathan Barker. The score was now 59-4 after ten overs.

This is where the innings began to change, with Thorbek starting the revival, he was smashing the ball to all parts, including nearly taking out a passing canoeist with one massive six. He finally went, caught behind off Hawker. This brought Gilmour to the crease and he meant business. In tandem with debutant James Bunday, they gradually started to amass a daunting total. Gilmour was striking the ball as cleanly as ever, and made light work of dispatching ex-international Bellhouse for consecutive boundaries. Finally Bunday was trapped LBW by Pearce for 43, but this only brought Rummery to the crease who had ideas of posting a massive total.

Gilmour fell to the returning Omar, but this still left time for Smith and Rummery to put on a further 35 runs from the last three overs, with Newenden finishing up on 225-9 from their 30.

We were treated a superb tea from Karen and Kieran Hills, Trevor's son and daughter in law, I also understand a lot of the baking was done by Karen' smother Joanna. It was the quintessential English cricket tea, with a wonderful array of delicious sandwiches, I do like a good cheese and tomato. Some sensational savouries, I really enjoyed the chorizo sausage rolls and topped off with a delectable selection of home made cakes. Thank you very much guys.

The Biddenden pursuit started well, with Bellhouse and Hills taking the game to the Newenden bowlers. Smith had kept Rummery back for his first change and this soon changed things round, with him dismissing both openers in his second over, leaving Biddenden at 56-2.

Piper and Pearce continued to pick up runs, but both their innings came to an end following a great spell by Thorbek from the Top End. Biddenden were now 103-4 at the halfway point.

This brought Morris and Field together who settled into a good rhythm and started to chip away at the total. Field was batting beautifully and took a particular liking to Harker, smashing him for three consecutive fours in one over. Harker had been unlucky, having Morris dropped in the deep the over before.

Smith rolled the dice for the final time and brought himself and Rummery back on, but by then the batsmen were set and they knocked off the winning runs with an over to spare.

It was a great game, played in a great spirit.
