Newenden continued their perfect preparation for their league campaign with another comfortable victory, this time over a decent Castle Hill side.
The team featured eight changes from the previous week, which demonstrates our current strength in depth, but these changes by no means weakened our side. Having lost the toss, the opposition chose to bat, which is where things started to go wrong for them.
Rummery opened up from the Top End and pinned their opener LBW first ball, a more plumb decision you will struggle to see all season. Smith was settling into his customary rhythm from the Pavilion End and picked up his first wicket of the season, after some sharp work from specialist backward point fielder JB. Another batsmen was dismissed shortly after, with Ian Jones taking what will surely be an early contender for catch of the season. The batsmen climbed into a loose ball from Smith, and creamed a powerful cover drive, which was somehow picked up by Jones fielding at short cover, diving sharply to his left, the look of surprise on the batsmen's face was priceless. Rest assured that will not be the last amazing catch Jonesy takes this season. Castle Hill were now teetering at 32-3 from 10 overs.
This brought on a double bowling change, Ian Jones came on from the Top End and immediately took control of proceedings, bowling three consecutive maidens, then picking up their captain with a tasty dipping delivery that totally bamboozled him as it rearranged his stumps. Collingwood had come on from the Pavilion End and made an April NCG look like a dust bowl in Chennai as he demonstrated that there was some decent turn available.
Jones and Collingwood both picked up another wicket a piece, then it was over to the George Jones show, he bowled a very tidy spell, taking 3-15 from his six overs, which included another decent catch from JB in his customary position and a steepling pouch from Collingwood.
Alex Durtnell snared his first victim of the season after some sharp work from Sloan behind the stumps.Charlie kept incredibly all day, he is the gift that keeps on giving.
Castle Hill were finally all out for 168.
We all enjoyed another cracking tea, courtesy of the Jones', offering us a delicious array of sandwiches and finished off with some particularly lovely fresh cream scones and strawberries.
The Newenden innings didn't start too well, with Morris falling cheaply to a lowish delivery. This brought the returning Bourne to the crease who settled into a a solid partnership with Fred Smith. They both looked very comfortable, with Smith demonstrating some lovely stroke play on the drive.Smith fell for 50, leaving us at 84-2. George Jones came in and struck some good looking shots before being caught for 14. Bourne was then joined by Rummery, who obviously had to be somewhere, as he smashed 27 off about ten balls before being bowled. Sloan came out at number six, and he and Bourne took us home with 7 overs to spare, with Bourne bringing up his half century to boot.
It was another great performance, and another great win.
Goudhurst are rolling into town on Sunday, good luck Goudhurst.
