Newenden started the season in style with an emphatic victory over local rivals Rolvenden.

Upon arrival the cricketing gods had been kind to us as a resplendent NCG was bathed in sunshine. The ground looked incredible thanks to hour upon hour of work from our new groundsmen, the club legend Mr Guy Rummery.

Being Easter Sunday, a lot of our the squad was unavailable, but we had still managed to field a strong and youthful side, barring a couple of us elder statesmen. Upon winning the toss, Newenden opted to bowl. This proved to be a good decision with Bradney knocking over their opener in the first over. Batsmen continued to come and go at regular intervals, leaving Rolvenden wobbling at 18-3. Finn Piper was bowling a particularly hostile spell from the Pavilion End, which bodes well for the forthcoming league campaign.

Bradney continued to pick up regular wickets, finishing with 4-15 from his five overs. Young Will Durtnell then joined the attack and produced a very tidy five over spell, going for very little and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket. Sam Piper bowled a useful few overs from the Top End, but the next bowling change was to prove fundamental to the result of the match.

Debutant Chris Thompson-Frost (the latest one off the Jasper Piper mate production line) opened up with two head high beamers, that earned him a warning from the umpire, he then found his rhythm.Firstly picking up the dangerous Thorbek, following a great catch from Jasper Piper, then two further wickets, one a rasping delivery that took the batsmen's off stump out.

Rolvenden had crept through to 100, but more excitement was yet to come. Alex Durtnell had bowled a tidy three over spell, containing the batsmen to the odd single, but this then lead to a double bowling change, Jasper Piper came on at the Top End, and on his third delivery the batsmen ran the ball down to short third man, Durtnell Snr was laying in wait and fired the ball back to the keeper, and he ran out the batsmen who was not even in shot. This led to a stern disagreement between the two batsmen, most amusing. But the best was yet to come. Will Simpson came on from the Pavilion End, and looked some what rusty. His first ball was well wide, then his second was a tasty looking long hop outside off stump, the batsman launched himself into it, creaming it high and wide over extra cover. We all looked round to see young Will Durtnell under the catch, he steadied himself and pouched is as clean as you like.It was a superb piece of fielding. Rolvenden were all out for 122.

We enjoyed a magnificent tea, which included some beautiful smoked salmon sandwiches from Bradders, along with some delicious cheese sandwiches and some Wotsit rolls from Al Durtnell, who had also made a couple of cracking cakes, one which he had even branded with the NCC logo. Great effort.

Newenden then began our chase, we started well, with Morris taking on the openers before falling LBW for 23 after four overs. Browning and Collingwood then played some lovely strokes to see us through to 104 before Browning popped one up. This then started a mini wobble, as both Jasper Piper and Will Simpson returned to the hutch after being dismissed first ball. Collingwood was unperturbed and smashed a couple of deliveries for four that brought up his 50 and took us to our target.Well batted Reubs.

It was a great day, it was so good to be back. The ground looked amazing and their was a really good atmosphere to the game.

Looking forward to taking on Castle Hill next weekend.
