Sunday saw a resplendent NCG play host to Trev's Big Bash.

It was the first of what we hope will be a regular end of season fixture held in memory of Trevor Hills, a dear friend and umpire for the club. There was a real party atmosphere to the day, with a great turnout of supporters of both sides.

The opposition were my old Biddenden team, with old being the operative word. The match was to be a 30 over encounter with every player bowling at least one over. All the batsmen had walk on music, a couple of which I am still chuckling at now.

Having won the toss Smith opted to bat, which appeared to be a sensible choice given the strength of his line-up. But as with all best laid plans things don't always work out. Bradney, a Biddenden old boy, set the tone, snaring Rummery in the first over, having him caught behind with a beautiful lifting delivery. Jones soon followed him back to the hutch, departing without troubling the scorers, then three balls later Browning joined the parade back to the pavilion, leaving Newenden reeling at 9-3.

Simpson was then clean bowled by a wicked delivery from Trev's grandson Nathan, leaving Newenden in a bit of trouble. Enter the Piper brothers, they began to rebuild the innings against some charitable bowling. Jasper had raced through to 39 before holing out to a collector's item, a catch by Morris in the deep. Finn continued to bat well, picking his shots wisely and chaperoning the tail through to a decent total. There were some decent hits by Durtnell, Gilmour and Smith, but eventually Newenden were all out for 199, with Finn stranded on 94 not out, after registering his first half century for the club.

After a delicious BBQ, cooked and served by Nicola Holland, Biddenden began their chase.

It started badly, with Simpson bowling an absolute jaffa first up and yorking their opening bat. There was then a period of consolidation, but Biddenden never looked likely to achieve their target. Tidy spells from the all Newenden bowlers saw wickets fall regularly and runs coming slowly. Holland ended up with figures of 2-11 and the ever-dependable Smith with 3-20. Newenden fielded superbly, with Cuthbert taking two catches and Browning executing a sharp run out with one stump to aim at. Biddenden were finally all out for 92.

It was a really enjoyable and happy event, and thank you so much to all that supported the day. I would also like to thank all of you that donated raffle prizes. How you getting on with that box of wine Simmo?

We have now finished our calculations and we can confirm that we made 700 pounds from the day, all of which will go to St Michael's Hospice.
