They say two things are certain in life, death and taxes, but now you may add the annual destruction of Sandhurst to the list.
Newenden recorded another emphatic victory over our local rivals on a cold and damp afternoon at the NCG. Having won the toss and opted to bat, the Newenden innings started steadily, with Sloan and Morris putting on 47 for the first wicket. Runs were hard to come by, due to a combination of the dampness of the ground and the the fact the outfield hadn't been mown, what would normally be certain boundaries became hard run twos. After Morris had fallen, Browning came to the crease and adopted his now customary style of dispatching the ball to all parts, before being bowled for a quickfire 32. Sloan was anchoring the innings and steadily accumulating runs as he watched partners fall at the other end. Rummery went following a superb catch by the returning Wenman at point, leaving the score at 109-3, and this brought Bourne to the middle. The pair settled into a rhythm, working the ball around and picking up the singles, and had taken the score through to 143-4 at the 30 over point. They then pressed the accelerator, as we knew 200 was the minimum score that would be required. Sloan finally fell in the 36th over for a valiant 59, which left Bourne to finish things off with Cuthbert who chipped in with a useful little cameo. Newenden finished on 203 from their allocation.
After a splendid tea, courtesy of the Simpsons, Sandhurst began their innings. We were aware we needed early wickets, especially with the very dangerous Wenman lying in wait. Jones Jnr opened up from the Top End, and bowled a couple of decent overs before knocking the ball onto his own head whilst fielding off his own bowling, this meant that Jones Snr came on, while Dr Holland assessed his patient at Mid Off. He settled into a beautiful rhythm and immediately combined with the now recovered Jones Jnr, to pick up both openers caught in the cordon. Smith is never one to miss out on an opportunity, and chipped in with a couple of wickets, which included the dangerous Wenman after he had just got off the mark. Jones Snr continued to bowl beautifully and picked up another couple of wickets before he ran out of overs, finishing with 4-9 from his spell. Sandhurst had long decided that they would take the honourable draw ( not easy to achieve in a limited overs game) and try and bat out the overs. Another Newenden old boy Al Cutler, was proving hard to dislodge, as was his batting partner. Browning came on and picked up his now obligatory wicket, then Morris chipped in picking up Cutler the following over. This left Bourne to mop up the final two wickets and leave Sandhurst stranded on 107 All Out.
It was a wet, grey day, and credit to Sandhurst for playing on in those conditions. We enjoy winning and have now surpassed our number of victories from last season, with a couple to play. Another cracking season.
