What a game of cricket. 466 runs scored, 17 wickets taken, two spectacular catches, a direct hit run out from 35 yards, and a last ball victory for Newenden. They don't come much better than that.
After Benenden had called off for the second time this season, JB arranged a last minute fixture with Tonbridge CC, a wholly different proposition. When they arrived, we were informed that they had six of their first team playing, who currently play in Division Four of the Kent League, a very decent standard. Having lost the toss, Newenden were put into bat, which suited us. Morris and Sloan opened up and made the most of some erratic opening bowling, cruising through to 75 from the first ten overs. Sloan then fell LBW, which brought Browning to the crease. After a quick chat with his partner about consolidating and there being no need for any rash shots, Browning had other ideas and deposited his first ball into the river for six, the ball was last seen on it's was to Rye.Morris and Browning continued the onslaught, before Morris fell for 54, with the score at 107-2. Tonbridge then turned to their spinners to try and exert some control on the proceedings, which they did. Newenden then wobbled, losing their middle order, having taken the score through to 159-5. This brought the promoted Balfour to the crease to partner Sam Piper, they both batted brilliantly, adding 61 for the sixth wicket, which really gave the innings some momentum. The last few wickets fell cheaply, but Newenden had posted a highly competitive 235 from their 40 overs.
The Tonbridge innings started steadily, with Bradney bowling a very tight five over burst from the Top end, and Sam Piper opening up from the Pavillion end. Both kept their lines well, and picked up a wicket each for their troubles. After the first ten Tonbridge were 42-2, but looked up for the fight. Balfour replaced Bradney at the Top end and bowled a great spell, after some initial reluctance to continue after a couple of leg side deliveries. Piper then picked up his second wicket, bowling out their dangerous looking number four. Then came one of the moments of the match, the batsman pushed a drive to deep cover, where Jasper Piper was lurking, he attacked the ball, picked it up and in the same motion, threw down the stumps from 35 yards out, with one stump to aim at. The batsman backing up was well out of his crease and had to make the long walk back to the changing room. We are becoming used to seeing an exceptional level of fielding from Jasper, but this was a class above. The fall of the wicket brought their overseas player to the crease who started to take on the bowling, and Tonbridge had pushed through to 125-5 before Balfour got him to play one shot too many, and he picked out Waterhouse, with a superb diving catch at mid-off. Tonbridge kept on coming, as they had kept their premier batsmen back down the order. He began to dismantle the Newenden bowling, and had put on 50 in no time. Morris shuffled his deck and brought on Boland, with his steady brand of off spin. He added some control to the proceedings, and in his second over we witnessed one of the classic moments of the season so far. Their batsmen caught a ball flush out of the middle, and was hurtling towards the legside boundary, well above head height, and who should arrive, diving, one handed at full stretch, to take one of the catches of the season, none other than Super Waterhouse. It was one of the best catches you will see. This did not stop Tonbridge continuing to hunt down their target with their skipper smashing the ball to all parts too. Fortunately there were three Bradney overs up the skipper's sleeve, and he came back on to bowl out the match. Bradney bowled beautifully with his final three overs only going for 14 runs in total, this left young Boland with the pressure of bowling the final over, with Tonbridge needing 12 to win. The first three balls went for singles, with Newenden protecting the boundaries, then the fourth ball was smashed for four, which left them needing 5 off 2. Boland then conjured up a cracking delivery that spat and lifted, a much needed dot ball. The final delivery had to hit the river, it ended up hitting Sloan's gloves.
It was a brilliant game of cricket, and a great game to win. Well done to all involved.
