Newenden returned to winning ways in emphatic style yesterday with a crushing victory over local rivals Sandhurst. The team showed a ruthless professionalism, that had been missing last weekend, which left Sandhurst reeling in our wake.
Upon arrival at the ground and a quick pitch inspection, it was obvious that the track was going to play a big part in the days proceedings. A lively looking green top indicated that it was going to be a tricky day for the batsmen.
After losing the toss and being put into bat, Newenden made steady if uneventful progress. The first significant moment came when Sloan was struck down by a recurrence of his hamstring injury, attempting a rather chancy single. Unfortunately he was to play no further part in the game. We hope Charlie recovers in time to feature in our run-in.Batsmen came and went, all chipping in. There was a particularly eye-catching cameo from the returning Gutteridge Snr, who deposited one six straight onto the newly retiled clubhouse roof, smashing several of the aforementioned tiles in the process, at least the scaffolding was still up to make the repair job a little easier on Monday morning. The only partnership of note was between Holder and Bourne, who put on nearly 50 for the 4th wicket. There was some late excitement in the final overs, particularly when Cuthbert and Finn Piper scored 30 off the final 4 overs, which included an all-run four, which left poor Winston with a migrane. By tea Newenden had reached a respectable yet gettable 171.
Unfortunately what appeared gettable, soon became nigh on impossible for the Sandhurst side. The Newenden bowlers were fired up and looking forward to getting to grips with this juicy wicket. Opening bowlers Bradney and Finn Piper tore the heart out of the Sandhurst batting line-up. Bradney bowled his customary disciplined, aggressive spell, picking up a key wicket in the process, but plaudits must go to his opening bowling partner. Young Finn Piper has been threatening a performance like this for some time, but this was a truly sensational spell of seam bowling. He bowled 5 overs in his first spell and picked up 5-13, all of them bowled. This left Sandhurst floundering at 18-6. JB then brought on the next line of attack, Piper Snr and Smith, who again bowled beautifully, both getting some real response from the track. Piper must be one of the unluckiest bowlers on the circuit, and is definitely one of the angriest, if only that poor batsmen could hit it. Smith chipped in with a very tidy, economic spell, and picked up a wicket after a great catch from young Harry Gutteridge, who had stepped in for the injured Sloan. The ball was smashed high and hard to long on, and not only did he stay incredibly calm he also managed to not be put off by Garry charging at him shouting mine. Well done Harry. The side fielded magnificently, every ball was chased down and every stop made, and Bourne and Harker nearly combined to create one of the moments of the summer, with JB flicking the ball up in the slips with his foot and Harker nearly taking the ricochet at full stretch behind him.
Once we had got Sandhurst down to 60-8, the game started to drift as they began to try and bat out for the draw. An inspired bowling change by improving skipper JB brought Finn Piper back on, and that was that. He took a wicket with his first ball back, then another one the next over, finishing with figures of 7-15, which puts him at the top of the ladder for the burgundy bowling cap. Well played Finn.
It was a great team performance, that centred around a phenomenal individual one. It felt good to get back to winning ways and it is always nice to get one over your local rivals. Good luck Crowhurst next week.
