A combination of hangovers must be held responsible for this disappointing result. After the jubilation at the success of the inaugural Newenden Family Funday on Saturday, there appeared to be a general apathy to the game on Sunday.
On paper we looked very strong, but you never win a game on paper. After losing the toss, Newenden were put in the field, something that we are not keen on or used to. We are a team that bats first and bats teams out of the game, two of our three losses this season have come when we have been chasing.
Unfortunately the tone for our innings was set when, the ever reliable Rummery fired his first two deliveries wide, things did not improve. The Langton Green openers were both competent and played their shots, but were helped by some very generous bowling from the Newenden attack. The first wicket fell at 140, which was the perfect platform for their other batsmen to come in and attack at will. Young Angus Balfour showed some resolve, only going for 20 runs off his 6 overs, and picking up a wicket to boot. Georgey Jones bowled a couple of decent overs at the death, but Langton Green had piled on 272 from their 40 overs.
Our batting performance started very much like the bowling, Morris holing out in the first over following an awfully misjudged shot, without troubling the scorers. O'Brien was soon to follow, after a somewhat dubious LBW decision. Other batsmen came and went, with no one really looking like we were going to get up with the run rate and challenge this hefty total. That was until Will Simpson came to the crease and started to bash the Langton Green attack around the park, like he has done to so many other teams this season. We flirted with the idea that he may carry us through, but he finally fell for 61 trying one shot too many. Young Jones played a very attractive cameo at the end of the innings, which bodes well for the future.
This is a loss that is hard to take, but one which we cannot argue with. We just did not perfom like we can. We will wipe our mouths and move onto next week, where we have Sandhurst firmly in our sites. I predict a wholly different result.
