Well what can I say? There are times in life when you just have to swallow your pride and admit that you just weren't good enough. I brought my Biddenden side to the NCG with high hopes, but left with them in tatters, as we felt the full force of the Newenden bandwagon.
After JB had won the toss and elected to bat, Biddenden came out of the traps quickly, picking up two wickets in the first 3 overs. The omens were good,as both were the result of the rarest of things, a Morris slip catch. With Newenden tittering at 10-2, things were looking precarious. Unfortunately for Biddenden this was to prove the pinnacle of their achievement for the day, as the indomitable pair of Charlie Sloan and Karl Rummery once again combined, to take the game away from the opposition. With a perfectly paced innings, they both accumulated runs consistently, showing great discipline, punishing the bad balls and keeping out the good ones. They batted for 30 overs together, putting on 187 for the third wicket, which must be a record at Newenden. Rummery was finally out LBW for 104, his second ton of the season, and Charlie Sloan carried his bat and finished up with 89 not out. Special mention must go to JB for his cameo at the back end of the innings, after top edging one straight into his face and blood dripping down his chin, he then put their opening bowler back over his head into the houses behind, my hero!
At the interval, Newenden had amassed 257 runs off their 40 overs.
The task was all too much for Biddenden, who without a fantastic knock from the returning James Meddings would have been skittled for under 100. Rummery, who must be fed on a diet of raw steak, bowled his customary fiery spell from the top end, picking up a couple of wickets in the process. Smith bowled a very tidy spell from the Pavillion end, also picking up two wickets, one of which was the opposing captain who departed without troubling the scorers, much to the amusement of both teams.Reuben Collingwood bowled a useful spell from the top end picking up 4-33, and the Biddenden innings finally came to an end after young Harry Gutteridge, bowling his maiden spell for the mens team, drew the batsmen into a suicidal run which meant that they limped through to 109 all out.
Another great win for Newenden, and another great day. We now lie in wait for Winchelsea to arrive next weekend. Good luck Winchelsea.
