We are back on track. After last week's disappointment, Newenden hit their straps and got the season back to winning ways with a convincing win over Benenden.
We had a good, young side out,who had little intention of losing back to back games, and Benenden were unaware of the task they were facing. After losing the toss, Benenden optimistically decided to bat. That proved to be a poor decision. As has been the case all season, Newenden set about the opposition with their usual vigour. Harry Bradney, recently returned from a weeks training camp in Kavos, bowled a beautiful spell from the top end, asking numerous questions, with very few answers offered. His opening bowling partner was the ever-consistent Sam Piper, who continues to dumbfound opening batsmen across the county. After a ridiculous mix-up, one of the Benenden opening batsmen was run out , after mistaking one of our players for an umpire, due to his very fetching blue tracksuit trousers.Things did not inprove for Benenden.
After a restrictive first ten, where Benenden struggled through to 33-2, we saw the introduction of Finn Piper to the attack. Finn bowled beautifully, tying up the batsmen for a wonderful six-over spell, picking up two wickets for his efforts. Alex Hastings, a debutant for the club, bowled a tidy spell from the other end, and the game started to drift away from a Beneden side, who offered little in terms of attacking shots.
We then saw young George Jones come on at the top end for a crucial spell, after suffering some punishment last weekend, he bowled with a bravery and maturity, that belies his years. A fantastic little spell that maintained the momentum in the field. Bowling in tandem with Will Simpson from the River End, who finished up with 2-12 from his six overs.
The Piper boys returned for the death overs, with both of them picking up wickets, and Sam ending up with 3-29 and Finn with an impressive 3-10, from their 8 overs. The forty overs were a masterclass in efficiency and professionalism, and Benenden ended up with a sub-par 123.
Never easy chasing a tricky little total, we lost the returning Nick Waterhouse for just a single, Morris and Harker took the total through to 34, before Morris was out to a great catch at deep cover. This brought the form man to the crease. Will Simpson and Harker decided the best way to knock of the total was to attack, and played with an abandon that turned things firmly into Newenden's favour. Simpson fell when we had 74 on the board, then Holder joined Harker at the crease. Harker carried on with the same approach, bringing up his maiden half century for the club with some impressive attacking stroke play.
Newenden cruised past the target with 17 overs to spare and another emphatic win on the board.
Well done, roll on next week.
