Newenden Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets
Match report
ONE SMALL STEP FOR DAN, ONE GIANT LEAP FOR NEWENDEN
Match Result : Newenden win by 9 wickets (Stowting 89 All Out, Edwards 5-22, Bradney 3-23, Patel 2-29, Newenden 93-1, Edwards 52*)
Man of the Match : Dan Edwards
Sunday saw Newenden take a huge step towards being crowned the best village side in the county.
Following last week's washout, which strengthened our position further as we were not scheduled to play, we turned up at an immaculate NCG knowing that a win against Stowting would leave us just one game away from clinching the Division 1 title.
We approach every game with the same mindset, we take nothing for granted. Stowting may have been bottom of the table, but it only takes one exceptional individual performance to change a cricket match. Fortunately for us that performance came from one of our own, as Dan Edwards put in a superb all-round display.
Having won the toss we decided to bowl first and things started badly for Stowting and only got worse. Edwards is fast becoming as important to us with the ball as he is with the bat and his knack for taking wickets in the first over is proving to be invaluable. This time it took just two balls for him to demolish the opposition captain's stumps, who trudged off looking like he had just found out that his house had been included in the new ULEZ boundary.
Edwards then picked up two more wickets, firstly one following a sharp slip catch by Patel, then clean bowling their number four who just looked relieved to be out of the firing line. We then saw a moment of brilliance as Patel joined the party, dismissing their dangerman following a sensational reflex catch by Bellhouse in the slips. I haven't seen him react that fast since he got his first match on Tinder.
Edwards then added another, with Yeabsley taking a great diving effort after Harker decided that he didn't fancy moving a yard to his left to take it himself. It was not long til Edwards bagged his five wicket haul, with Browning pouching a terrific catch standing in for Sloan behind the stumps.
They say that lightening doesn't strike twice, well it did on Sunday, as Patel and Bellhouse combined again. This time with Bellhouse taking an even more amazing one-handed catch as the ball flew past him at first slip.
Stowting were now reeling at 56-7 and they decided to throw caution to the wind, with their batsmen striking some powerful shots. Leading league wicket-taker Bradney was then introduced and showed that even when he bowls badly he can still take wickets. He burgled three scalps to wrap up the innings, leaving the opposition 89 All Out.
As we walked in at the interval the Stowting side had the look of someone who had won a family boat trip in the raffle but had then found out it was on the refugee barge off Portland.
It seems a while since I have reported on a tea, but it was certainly worth the wait as Dan Edwards ( is there anything that boy can't do?) , his girlfriend Izzy and his Mum Anne treated us to an absolute humdinger of a spread. We had some splendid sandwiches, with my favourite being the beef & horseradish and egg mayo & crispy bacon. A superb array of savouries, including quiches, sausage rolls, honey & mustard sausages and some delicious chilli meatballs. There were some tantalising red pesto and tomato tartlettes and spinach and ricotta filo parcels, we even had some beautiful smoked salmon blinis. Izzy had created some cheese cases that had been filled with red peppers, onion and tomato which were exquisite. Then onto the sweet stuff. We had chocolate dipped strawberries, some wonderful fruit and meringue skewers and an array of flavoured cupcakes emblazoned with Newenden Cricket Club, but the show stopper was the birthday cake for yours truly with firework candles to boot. It was an absolute triumph and when Dan has had enough of cricket a career in catering awaits. Thank you.
After Dan had cleaned up the kitchen, he strapped on his pads and went out to chase down the target, it is always tricky with a small total as you never quite know how to bat. Edwards didn't see it that way and started to smash the ball to all parts from the off. At one point he hit so many balls into the car park in the field next door that people had to take evasive action. In fact I haven't seen that many people run for cover since Stevie Wonder turned up pissed for the local ninja star throwing contest.
We made light work of the chase, getting there in fifteen overs for the loss of one wicket.
This win means that only one team can catch us and that is Chestfield, who we travel to in two weeks time for the title decider. I can't bloody wait.
