HE WHO PAYS THE PIPER CALLS THE TUNE
Legend goes that Robert the Bruce was inspired by watching a spider continually try to build a web, spawning the phrase ' If at first you don't succeed, try, try and try again'. I would imagine that if that particularly determined spider had played for Northiam, even he would have given up by now, as it has now been over ten years since they managed to record a win over the mighty NCC.
We arrived at the ground looking for a hard fought, competitive encounter, a bit like the brutal bouts in the 90s between Nigel Benn and Steve Collins, unfortunately this ended up being more like Nigel Benn versus Phil Collins, as the opposition failed to lay a glove on us.
Having been humiliated in the home fixture in front of the cameras of the Daily Telegraph in April, Northiam were just grateful that the national press had decided that the rematch was not worthy of coverage.
With the recent spell of of hot weather, the ground was drier than a Frenchman's bath mat and had a closer resemblance to a dustbowl in Chennai than a school cricket pitch in the rolling hills of East Sussex.
We won the toss and opted to bat, things didn't start too well, with Patel and Gibbs both falling quite cheaply. Browning and Morris then steadied the ship, with the former playing some glorious shots before being trapped LBW for 45. Harker joined Morris and the pair had taken us through to 98 before the latter missed a straight one. Harker than channelled his inner Livingstone, that is Liam not Ken, and started to smash the opposition attack about. He survived a scare when on 25, having been caught behind off a no-ball. He finally fell for a valiant 37. The lower order chipped in nicely with notable contributions from Kutner, Piper and Bradney. We posted a competitive 167-9 from our 35 overs.
At the interval we were treated to a wonderful tea, only the second one at an away fixture all season, such a shame to see the demise of such an important part of village cricket.
Now to Northiam's innings. I never thought I would write these words but we actually enjoyed a day out with Finn Piper yesterday as he single-handedly dismantled the opposition batting line-up. Bowling quickly with beautiful lines he took five wickets in as many overs. It was a blistering spell of bowling that ripped the heart out of Northiam's run chase. He was ably supported by some superb catching in the cordon from Patel and Gibbs.
There was still time for Smith, Balfour and Browning to get amongst the wickets as we bowled Northiam out for 92.
It was a fun day out and played in a jovial spirit and we all enjoyed a few pints down the pub afterwards.
Next week sees us return to serious action with our must-win league game against Street End at home. Please do come down and support the boys in what is one of the most important games in our recent history.
