Man of the Match : Finn Piper

The NCG welcomed a change of pace this weekend as we swapped the intensity of last week's top of the table league clash for the more gentile atmosphere of our annual friendly with the Goudhurst Gentlemen.

Having won the toss, we opted to bat. Things started smoothly enough with Morris and Harker rattling through to 35 from the first five overs, before Harker nibbled at an out swinger and was caught at second slip. Goudhurst obviously hadn't read the script as they continued to take wickets with Browning falling a couple of overs later, followed by Morris, who holed out in the deep. Suddenly we were 51-3.

Our concerns were to be short lived as we had the Pipers, three of them to be precise, not all related I may add and varying in looks and levels of mobility, but you can never have enough Pipers, unless of course one of them is Tim Piper.

Firstly Jim and Jasper began to steady the ship, taking us through to 88, before Jim was removed by one of the youngsters he trains at Marden Under-13s. We were all very surprised by this, not that Jim had got out to a little kid, but by the fact the kid was in the Under-13s as he looked about eight. Must be the coaching.

Al 'Mini-Merv' Auger then strolled to the middle. It was a only a brief sojourn, as he returned the very next ball. He has picked up a particular penchant for poultry, as he now leads the race for the Duck Trophy with two out of two. I hear Ladbrokes have stopped taking bets for the hat trick on Saturday.

Jasper was then joined by Finn, and the pair put on an untroubled 73 before Jasper decided to give a little catching practice. There was still time for Chatterton to smash a swashbuckling 31 and for Finn to bring up his half century.

We finished up 224-9 at tea.

Well God bless Sweden. They have given us Abba, IKEA and smorgasbords, but NCC's favourite Swedish import by far is Ingrid and Ake. They laid on a phenomenal tea, which was the perfect combination of a traditionally British cricket tea fused with a touch of Sweden. It was remarkable. The savouries were outstanding, homemade smoked salmon cheese muffins, coronation chicken rolls, even the quintessential cucumber finger sandwiches. Then a nod to the motherland with some beautiful Swedish meatballs. Then the cakes, well the cakes were something else. We had summer pudding, cream scones and a particularly lovely lemon drizzle cake and even a chocolate cake with tiramisu filling branded with the NCC logo. A truly impressive effort. Thank you Ingrid and Ake.

After gorging ourselves we reluctantly took to the field. Things started very well, with Kutner definitely in the mood. Fired up by eight cans of Moretti, he was bowling like a man possessed., picking up a wicket with only his second delivery after getting it to nip back and cannon into off stump.

Smith then took out their other opener and things were looking shaky for Goudhurst. The power of the Moretti was starting to fade but Kutner should have picked up a second but for a regulation drop in the slips by Jasper Piper. Burgess then grabbed a wicket, followed by Mini-Merv picking up his first scalp for the club, following a great catch by Finn Piper.

Goudhurst then had a decent partnership, one of the bats was looking to take on the chase, while the other one was just looking to stay in, it did lead to a period of the game that felt more drawn out then the Tory leadership race. Perhaps Liz Truss may have been a better option in the middle order for the opposition. It probably didn't help that old butter fingers Chatterton decided to drop the same batsmen twice in a matter of overs, I blame the fact that he wasn't wearing his golf shoes.

The pair had taken Goudhurst through to 130 before one had to retire hurt, I think he may have slipped into a coma whilst batting. This brought their captain to the crease who brought a much need injection of chutzpah to proceedings.

He started to take on the bowling, but was left with too much to do. Goudhurst finished up on a valiant 177-6, falling just 47 runs short in their chase.

As always, it was a great game played in a great spirit. Everyone batted and everyone bowled. Just remind me Finn, who got more wickets me or you?

We have a double header next weekend, starting with a game against touring side Wonersh at home on Saturday, which will feature Toby Holland's tea, one of the events of the summer, followed by a return to league action against Bapchild, away on Sunday.
