Man of the Match : Sam Gilliland

Revered Australian philosopher Paul Hogan (one of very few) once said 'Cricket needs brightening up a bit. My solution is to let the players drink at the beginning of the game, not after.'

Well Charlie was certainly inspired by the Crocodile Dundee star's words, as the first thing he did upon arrival was stick a huge bucket full of booze in the middle of each changing room, which very much set the tone for the day.

The Chairman's side consisted of a few Newenden stalwarts and a load of St Ronan's teachers, the majority of which appeared to be South African. In fact I haven't seen so many South Africans in Newenden since Dave Wheeler got hold a dodgy batch of biltong baps during the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Having won the toss, yes you did read that correctly, Newenden opted to bat. Things started badly with Morris smashing a stray delivery to deep square leg in the second over. Harker and Piper kept the scoreboard ticking along nicely, before 'twinkle toes' Harker danced down the track and was stumped by Sloan. Piper continued to take on the bowling and it took a moment of individual brilliance to dismiss him. Having been bowled a slow floater outside off stump, Jim's eyes lit up as he hammered the ball on the up towards mid-off, quick as flash, Jones Snr, standing at short cover, stuck out one of his oversized mitts and took an astounding catch. Piper departed for 54 leaving us on 100-3 after 16 overs.

The Newenden innings continued at pace, with numerous batsmen getting themselves in then getting themselves out. There were eye-catching knocks from debutant Sam Gilliland, Edwards and Bellhouse. When Smith fell to the very last ball before tea, Newenden had finished on 240 all out from our 35 overs.

The tea, oh my god the tea. I am fast running out of superlatives to describe the quality of the fayre that we are lucky enough to enjoy every Sunday. Emma and Charlie had pulled out all the stops as we were treated to a veritable feast. The sandwiches were supreme, with Emma going for the classic options that are so well received at cricket. The savouries were something else, homemade sausage rolls that melted in the mouth, smoked salmon and creme fraiche on sour dough and I particularly enjoyed a sun dried tomato/pesto twist that was beautiful. Then to the cakes, well the cakes were sensational. We had the indulgence of the rocky roads, a superb walnut cake and the piece de resistance being a sensational Victoria Sandwich. It was a delight. Thank you.

Happy and heavier we took to the field for the second innings. The opposition opened up with the Jones boys and they looked good as they put on 50 in quick time, before Balfour, who was bowling a very decent spell from the top end, bowled Jones Snr off his pads. Smith then picked up Jones Jnr in the next over, trapping him plumb in front. The Chairman's side was undeterred as they kept the scoreboard rattling along, thanks in some part to Patel deciding to bowl leg spin for the day, which resulted in more rank long-hops, than if David Mellor mated with a kangaroo, something that I wouldn't have put past him in the 90s.

Gilliland finally made the breakthrough with Kutner taking a cracking catch at square leg to dismiss the St Ronan's head of cricket, who was batting in brown shorts and using his daughter's size 6 bat. Standards have obviously slipped at the school recently. Their number three was batting beautifully and actually had us looking at the scoreboard with a little concern at one point as they only needed 83 off the last ten overs.

Edwards was brought into the attack and finally managed to dislodge his man, pinning him LBW for a valiant 75. We were then into the tail, as he picked up Collingwood in his next over as he played all round a straight one.

There was still time for mini-Merv Hughes, Al Auger, to bowl the final over. Having been assured that we needed at least 25 runs to defend to make it a viable option, he actually bowled a very tidy last over, which restricted them to 206-6 from their 35 overs.

It was an absolutely wonderful day out, played in a great spirit and we would all like to thank Charlie and Emma for all their effort (and expense) which made it such a memorable day.

Am looking forward to next year's game already.
