Benjamin Franklin once said that there were only two things certain in life : death and taxes. Well he can now add a third thing to that list, Newenden winning a league game on a Sunday. Which was very much the case yesterday as we recorded our 24th consecutive league win with a dominant victory over a game Smarden side.

It was a beautiful sunny day and the NCG looked resplendent as you drove past, unfortunately you are then greeted by the carbuncle that is the village hall. Having the two side by side creates such a contrast of emotions. It is like being invited to a dream dinner party then finding out Newenden Nibbles are doing the catering.

Having lost the toss, Smarden opted to bat. They started well enough, steadily accumulating runs against the miserly bowling of Scott and Patel. Having survived a couple of scares, their captain finally fell to Patel having been trapped plumb in front, leaving them at 35-1 from the first ten overs. Then came a pivotal moment in the game. Bradney got one to lift, which caused the ball to glance off the batter's shoulder and straight into Sloan's face behind the stumps. It was a nasty blow, which made his cheek swell up as if he had gone ten rounds with Apollo Creed, all we needed to complete the scene was for him to come round and start yelling ' Adwiiennnne'. Charlie had to go off to hospital but you will be glad to hear was able to make it to the pub for a couple of brandies just as we had wrapped up the win.

Patel took over behind the stumps and did a very impressive job. His first task was to try a deal with the erratic Edwards. After a couple of wide deliveries he found his line and bowled their set batsmen round his legs. He then picked up their dangerous looking number four with an absolute jaffa with the last ball before drinks, with Smarden reeling at 78-3.

Wickets then continued to fall at regular intervals, with Smith picking up an important wicket following a great catch in the deep by Edwards, but the wicket of the day must surely go to Balfour. Bowling with some proper gas, he had their batsmen worried and one particularly quick delivery saw their number eight jump aside, like a matador avoiding a bull, and watch the ball cannon straight into the top off middle stump, sending the bail flying all the way over the boundary rope. The scorer would have had to take evasive action, fortunately she was inside buying beers for the opposition.

In the end Smarden crept through to a below par 161-8 from their 40 overs.

Now for the main event, The Bradney Tea. Every year this carries a weight of expectation and rest assured this year's didn't disappoint. It was a true culinary master class. We had everything from chicken tikka sandwiches, to salmon and asparagus filo pastry parcels. There was an array of savouries including home made sausage rolls and cheese and onion bites. Then the cakes, well the cakes were to die for. My particular favourites being the malteaser cake, pure indulgence and the apple and raspberry pies, and not forgetting the delectable cup cakes. It was a triumph. Thank you ( a full video can be seen on our instagram feed - newendencc)

We hoped to make light work of chasing down the target and that we did. We started strongly with Edwards and Patel scoring freely from the off. This included Edwards managing to stick one straight through the window of a parked car. There was only one solitary VW Polo lurking in the shadows by the gate on Lossenham Lane, but like the ageing wildebeest at the drinking hole, Edwards eyed his prey and hunted it down without mercy. The best thing was that the man whose car it was had come with Smarden, he jumped in his car and just drove off. No blame, no claim.

Obviously racked with guilt, Edwards fell shortly afterwards, which left Patel to continue the onslaught. He was very much in need of some runs and this innings was about as welcome as a call from Amber Heard's agent saying ' Yeah, we've had loads of offers'.

Patel had raced through to 70 before he too was bowled with us still needing 68 for victory. You have heard of Greenidge and Haynes, Haydon and Langer well now you can add Bourne and Piper to the list of great cricketing partnerships. Having put on 120 last week, the pair took us home calmly with 18 overs to spare. Bourne is very much the inpenetrable wall, which ironically is the polar opposite of his nick name in the boarding house at Tonbridge. He has amassed a mountain of runs and whatever the format he never gets out. In fact he has been out less times than Finn Piper in Freshers Week ( know you will like that reference Jasper).

It was another superb day down at the NCG which we celebrated well into the evening at the White Hart.
