Newenden continued their late season winning streak with a comfortable victory over Crusaders CC.

With Sandhurst, our original opponents, pulling out at the eleventh hour ,we were able to secure a game against the London based touring side, Crusaders CC, and thankfully we did, as they were a great bunch and gave us a good game of cricket.

Having won the toss the visitors decided to bat. Things started badly for them, with their captain falling first ball to the guile of Boland. They then had a period of consolidation with Cottrell bowling a very tidy spell from the Lossenham Lane end. Boland then picked up his second wicket in his final over, leaving them at 60-2 from the first 14 overs. Jones had replaced Cottrell and was causing their big hitter all sorts of problems, almost as many as he was causing us with the local residents.

Jones pouched a couple of quick wickets, following a sharp caught and bowled and a good catch by Jim Piper at slip. The visitors were now in trouble at 90-4. Jasper Piper replaced Jones and immediately got his man, snaring their danger man with a tough catch taken by Harker in the deep. We continued to pick up wickets at regular intervals, with Wotton and Hinshelwood sharing three between them bowling at the death. The Crusaders ended up on 170-8 from their 35 overs.

Following a lot of cake, supplied by the opposition courtesy of left-overs from a Macmillan coffee morning, Newenden began their chase. It started well with Cottrell and Browning ticking along nicely until the former dropped one down mid-off's throat. Jasper Piper and Browning, currently locked in a battle for top run scorer, looked in no trouble as they took us through to 90, before Piper presented a reasonably straightforward caught and bowled chance. Browning saw his chance to cash in and that he certainly did. He smashed his way to a ton, and was finally caught with two runs still required. This left Morris to hit the winning runs and see us home with nine overs to spare.

Was a great game and we all enjoyed a drink together over the pub afterwards before they started their long journey home.
