Newenden Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Trev's Game on Sun 12 Sep 2021 at 1:00pm
Newenden Cricket Club Won by 52 runs

Match report Sunday saw the fourth annual match that is played in memory of our old umpire and dear friend, Trevor Hills.

The match is always played between Newenden and my old Biddenden side, with old being the operative word.

Newenden opted to bat first, and Browning and Cottrell soon set about the Biddenden attack. They had cruised through to 70 before Browning had to retire at 50. Harker then picked up Wotton, caught behind by Kelvin Hills. Then Nathan Barker accounted for Bear Pearse who had played a few nice shots on debut. Cottrell then dispatched Morris into the Selmes Trust field to bring up his half century. Jasper Piper's stay was short lived as Morris took a high one off the bowling of Hildenbrand. Suddenly Newenden were in a little trouble. Wickets continued to tumble until Hinshelwood and Farmer stabilised things before Archie Miles added a little excitement at number eleven. Biddenden were keen to keep the tailenders at the crease as Browning and Cottrell were waiting to come back in, but some calamitous running between Miles and Hinshelwood brought Browning back.

He smashed the last six overs for another 35 runs, leaving Biddenden with the daunting task of chasing 238 from their 30 overs.

We were then treated to somewhat of a rarity, a proper cricket tea. This was prepared by the Hills family, with a superb array of sandwiches and savouries, including some excellent sausage rolls. Then to top it off there was a plethora of some of the best cakes to grace the NCG. It was a joy to sit on the outfield, with the sun on your back and tuck into the quintessential english tradition, the cricket tea. Thank you to everyone that worked hard to put on such a magnificent spread.

The Biddenden reply started badly but things improved as we put up a good fight in chasing the target, with notable performances from Charlie Harker, Kelvin Hills and Brent Hildenbrand. We were dismissed for a valiant 186, with Patch Boland being the pick of the bowlers, picking 5-14 and getting his name on the honours board to boot.

We finished the day off with our usual raffle which raised well over £300, boosting the total amount for the day to over £600, all of which will goes to St Leonard's Hospice which did such a great job looking after Trevor.

It was a really happy day, enjoyed equally by those spectating and playing.

Biddenden will go away and have a long hard look at themselves and come back stronger than ever next year.
