Another day, another victory.
A morning deluge was not enough to halt our relentless pursuit of promotion from Division 5 of the Kent County Village League. Newenden continued to pile pressure on their league rivals with a convincing win over a young Frindsbury side.
Having lost the toss, we were put into the field. Frindsbury started well, with their captain knocking the ball around nicely. After the first ten overs they had progressed through to 47-0. Then came the breakthrough, Finn Piper was bowling a very decent spell from the Top End and finally broke the partnership, clean bowling their opener with a cracking yorker. Patel bowled his full allocation from the Pavilion End. and picked up their captain for his troubles, following a sharp caught behind from Sloan.
Wicket-machine Bradney was now warming into his spell from the Top End, and was soon amongst the wickets. He started to hit his length, then got one to swing back into the batsman, which he was unable to keep away from cannoning into his stumps. This was shortly followed by a sensational run out from Finn Piper, picking up the ball at Long Off, he chose to have a shy at the keeper's end and the ball smashed into the sticks, with the batsmen not even in shot, it was a remarkable piece of fielding.
This brought their main batsmen to the crease and he was looking assured, so we opted to target the other end. This plan worked well. Bradney seemed to be taking a wicket every over and was moving smoothly towards another five-for. Simpson was now into a useful spell from the Pavilion End, and was rewarded with two wickets, including their danger man, caught well in the deep by Patel.
It was fitting that Bradney completed the rout by taking the final wicket and returning with figures of 5-24, his second league' Michelle' of the season. Frindsbury finished up with a total of 90.
We were then treated to a veritable feast by 2017 Tea Champion, Charlie Harker. He had pulled out all the stops in an effort to regain the trophy. We were treated to an array of delectable sandwiches, including Beef & Chimmichuri, Prawn Mayo and Coronation Chicken. He had made some beautiful sausage rolls and even had asparagus spears wrapped in bacon. The show stopper were his homemade scotch eggs, they were magnificent. He has infused black pudding and chorizo into the sausage meat, which elevated the humble picnic snack to a different stratosphere. Then all topped off with some exceptional baking, including his signature lime and courgette sponge. Well done Charlie, definitely a contender.
After the excitement of tea, the Newenden innings was somewhat formulaic. Morris and Collingwood knocked 90 from 15 overs, without too many scares, before Morris was caught with the scores tied. This brought a reluctant Browning to the crease to score the winning runs.
It was another solid performance and a great day out.
