History was made at the NCG on Sunday as Newenden were victorious in the first ever league game to be held on our hallowed turf.

There has been a lot of build-up to this match and it was good to get things underway with a routine win over newly promoted Kennington.

Once again the ground looked immaculate, with the outfield so smooth it could have quite easily been transported straight from the Crucible.

With the opposition forfeiting the toss as they did not have an umpire (we had Guy Rummery straight off the mower and primed for action) Newenden opted to play to our strength and bowl first. This decision was soon vindicated.

We opened up with Rummery and Finn Piper, which would be a daunting prospect for any batsman, and it certainly was for the Kennington openers. From the Top End Rummery's radar was a little awry but was still bowling at a decent lick. Someone who's radar was not awry was Finn Piper, recently released from his intensive revision schedule, he had energy to burn, and this he did in some style.

Finn bowled nine overs on the bounce, with some serious venom. He picked up the first three wickets in his first four overs, leaving them 25-3 off 8 overs. He then clean bowled their number 5 and was very unlucky not to get himself on the Honours Board, narrowly missing out on castling their number 7 several times. He finished up with figures of 4-21 from his nine, a superb spell.

Bradney had come on from the Top End and picked up a wicket, which keeps at the top of the tree for wicket takers this season. Collingwood also chipped in with a cracking spell of spin bowling, which not only contained the batsmen, but also enabled us to pick up regular wickets. Smith had come on from the Pavilion End and bowled his spell straight through, picking up 1-32 from his nine. It was good to see him back to his metronomic best.

Collingwood picked up the last wicket, which left Kennington 132 All Out at tea.

After another cracking tea, this time from Gazza et famille. A superb range of mini rolls with beautiful fillings, combined with succulent home made sausage rolls and the piece de resistance being some delicious home baked cakes, baked by Newenden's answer to Mary Berry, Garry Smith himself. Great effort mate.

Newenden's chase started badly, with Morris holing out early on, but Collingwood and Sloan consolidated and took us through to 79 before Collingwood was trapped LBW for 41. Rummery then joined Sloan and continued the onslaught, racing through to 41 before being bowled by an unusual delivery, leaving us at 129-3. This left enough time for Fred Smith to march to the crease and bang his second ball for 4 and bring up the victory.

Our league campaign is up and running and I expect sterner tests lay ahead, but first we must navigate a couple of tough friendlies against Langton Green and Staplehurst.

Well done to all involved.
