Newenden Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Northiam CC on Sun 24 Apr 2022 at 1:30pm
Newenden Cricket Club Won by 144 runs
Match report
Tyson Fury knocked Dylian Whyte clean out in their fight on Saturday, and in similar fashion we delivered a devasting blow to our noisy neighbours on Sunday. Northiam were well and truly served a cricketing Noise Abatement Order.
Yesterday was a momentous day for two reasons, firstly we finally saw the return of the famous Newenden cricket tea after a three year hiatus and secondly, the national press have finally woken up and sent a photographer down to cover our match. Having grown tired of being sandwiched in between 'Situations Vacant' and 'Caravans for Sale' in the Wealden Advertiser for the past decade, we have always craved a greater platform to spread the gospel of Newenden Cricket. It was only a matter of time until the broadsheets got wind of what was happening at the NCG, with the Sunday Telegraph commissioning an article on the club (further details to follow).
Well we certainly turned it on for the cameras. Having lost the toss, we were put into bat, and things started well, with Morris and Edwards putting on 34 before the latter was bowled by the Northiam quick. Bourne came out at number 3 and things were going smoothly until he punched the ball to cover and called for the run, the fielder swooped on the ball and ran Morris out by a mile. To say there was no chance of a run would be an under statement, put it this way Prince Harry has more chance of winning ' Grandson of the Year' than I did of making that single.
Browning fell two balls later, chipping the ball back to the bowler and we were now looking a little wobbly at 59-3. If there is one man you want in a crisis, it is housewives favourite Mike Bellhouse. He was in imperious form and set about the Northiam bowling attack with effortless ease. He and Bourne put on a century partnership in 15 overs, with Bellhouse the aggressor and Bourne the anchor, I said anchor. Bellhouse was dealing in boundaries and Bourne was dealing in singles, in fact I haven't seen that many singles since Waterhouse organised the Sandhurst CC Ladies Night back in the summer of 2009.
Bourne finally fell for a valiant 41, with the partnership worth 118. There was still time for Bellhouse to bring up his hundred and for an eye-catching cameo from debutant Mike Parr, with the pair plundering 60 from the last six overs. Newenden finishing up on 255-4 from our 35 overs.
Now for really why we are here, the report on Jonesy's tea. It was a feeling of pure elation to walk into the pavilion and see one of our amazing teas laid out ready to be devoured. Jonesy certainly didn't disappoint. There were a plethora of superb sandwiches, he had gone for the quintessential classics, cheese and pickle, tuna and cucumber, ham and cheese. There were an array of savouries, including a wide range of his very own charcuterie from Moons Green. A Jonesy tea wouldn't be complete without his signature cream and jam scones, and all finished off with a beautiful cheese selection. A superb effort and one which will take a lot of beating in the quest for the highly coveted tea trophy.
The Northiam reply didn't start well with Smith getting straight amongst the wickets in his second over. Edwards was bowling a lively spell from the top end, and was rewarded as he picked up old Newenden alumnus Matt Cooke and then their number four in the same over. The Northiam innings never really got going with wickets falling at regular intervals. Bradney bowled two superb balls in succession, both nipping back to bowl the bamboozled batsmen. There was still time for Bellhouse's day to get even better as he picked up two wickets, as did Kutner who bowled a decent spell. Northiam crept through to 101 all out in 23 overs.
It was an great day out and just good to be back enjoying everything that is wonderful about cricket.
Next week we take on Langton Green in our final friendly before the league kicks off on May 8th.
