Match report
Mark Twain once said that ‘Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter’. Well that was very much the case on Friday evening, as the Overs 25s rolled back the years to record an emphatic victory over the much vaunted Under 25s, to take a 2-1 lead in the series.
There had been a lot of chat before the game, as the depleted Overs side looked no match for the much-hyped Unders one, but we all know that the whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts. The Overs were so depleted I doubt that Joe Biden would have looked out of place as a specialist fielder.
Guy never fails to amaze us with the wonders he works getting the ground ready for play. This year it looked better than ever. With the sun beating down on a bone-dry deck, it was hard to believe we were in Newenden and not Barbados Unfortunately the illusion was soon shattered as Newenden Nibbles drifted into vision, as I doubt there is a Bridgetown Bites, serving second rate pastries and luke-warm paninis on the long on boundary at the Kensington Oval, though I think I may have just stumbled onto an excellent franchise idea. Anyway I digress.
Some billed this as a mismatch of epic proportions, similar to when Anthony Joshua took on Andy Ruiz Jnr, where an unknown tubby little Mexican, fuelled by a diet of Snickers bars, took on the unbeaten chiselled champion, and from the look of things several of the Overs had adopted the same dietary routine over the winter.
Having lost the toss and being put in to bat, things started well with Harker and Bourne laying a solid platform before the latter fell to Farmer. Fred Smith then joined Harker and took the score through to 72 off the first ten overs before Harker holed out to Edwards.
Then came the collapse, with the so-called engine room of Bellhouse, Morris and Jim Piper, proving to be more Austin Allegro than Rolls Royce, falling for a combined total of seven runs, leaving us teetering at 90-6 off 15. The Overs needed someone to step up, and that someone was Ian Jones.
He started to bang the Unders bowlers to all parts, taking a particular liking to Edwards. After a blistering five over burst, Jones and Kutner took the Overs through to a very competitive 145.
After a leisurely break, of beers and burgers, cooked by man of the moment Jonesy, the Unders’ reply began.
Thorbek and Edwards laid out their intentions early, with Thorbek swinging like a rusty gate at every ball and was lucky not to be caught from the first two deliveries. Both batsmen started to find the boundary at regular intervals until Bellhouse managed to nip one back and bowl Edwards.
The Overs knew they had to take early wickets to expose the Under’s tail, which was longer than a queue of Dover-bound French lorry drivers.
Debutant Dave Norton then accounted for Browning, bowling him through the gate. Game on. Thorbek was continuing with his impressive display of power hitting, before being out foxed by Jones, bowling him for 48.
He then picked up Jasper Piper the very next ball, bamboozling him with a ball that bowled him all ends up.
The Overs then turned the screw, with Kutner bowling a great spell, and wickets falling at regular intervals. The Unders finished up on 126 all out with Bradney mopping up the tail in the final over.
It was a cracking game and the perfect way to start the new season. To see so much talent on show only goes to demonstrate the strength in depth the club possesses.
Roll on Northiam next Sunday.
