Man of the Match : Garry Smith
In the immortal words of U2, Sunday, bloody Sunday. We now know that each week as soon as we are about to set off to to play cricket you can guarantee that the heavens will open.
If we were to ever put together a soundtrack for this season it would start with Travis's 'Why does it always rain on me?', followed by Eurythmics's 'Here come the rain again', a quick burst of Rihanna ' Umbrella' and then finished off with a medley from Wet, Wet, Wet.
We have now lost more games to the weather this season than we did to COVID last year. It is getting beyond a joke.
The start of yesterday followed the now standard pattern but the meteorological gods finally shone on us as we managed to actually play a game.
Having driven down to Hythe in torrential rain, we didn't hold out much hope of getting in any play.Upon arrival, it was decided that we would go to the local pub for a pre-match briefing and then return at 2pm for a ground inspection.
On returning to the ground,by some kind of miracle, the rain had stopped and we decided to play a 30 over match. Having lost the toss we were put into the field. The opposition set out their intentions early on, with their opener striking both Finn Piper and Chirag Patel for straight sixes in the opening couple of overs. We then knew we were in a game.
Finn Piper had other ideas and after having a stonewall LBW decision turned down, combined with Patel to have their danger man caught at square leg off the very next ball. This kicked us into action. Patel then had their number three caught behind in the next over, following some superb glove work from Gibbs. Their number four had to retire hurt following a slip attempting a run.
Piper was settling into a cracking spell and picked up two more wickets for his efforts, finishing up with 3-22 from his seven overs. Bradney replaced Piper and was soon into his rhythm, beating the bat on a regular basis. The opposition captain came in and started to hit some big shots, but Bradney got his man just as things were starting to get away from us. Smith had joined the fray at the other end and picked up three wickets in no time, including a lightening fast stumping by Gibbs, who was having a great game. Smith bowled a beautiful spell finishing up with 3-11. Bellhouse came on for the penultimate over and picked up the final wicket with his second ball following a great catch by Finn Piper running back over his shoulder. This left Saltwood all out for 117.
Our response started well and only got better. Newenden's answer to Gilchirst and Sehwag wandered out to the middle and starting smashing some pretty decent bowling to all parts. Edwards was certainly in the mood, depositing their opening quick for consecutive sixes in his second over, he was not to be seen again. The pair had chased down the target in just ten overs to complete another emphatic victory for NCC.
It is now very much a two horse race for the title (click here to see the table https://kvcl.play-cricket.com/website/division/87332 ) and it still smarts that Kingsnorth managed to avoid us due to the rain, but all we can do is win our last two games and hope that they drop points in one of theirs.
Next up we have Rolvenden in our local derby. Always fun.
