Man of the Match: Jasper Piper
Played: 15 Won: 12 Lost: 3
After two away games played on a series of cabbage patches in South Kent, we were back at the home of (village) cricket for another of the seasons heavy weight clashes. This was a hot ticket, and after last season’s nipper, the Chairman engaged the big (and slightly littler) guns, along with a generous array of refreshments and a blockbuster tea (thank you Emma!).
The Chairman dominated the toss and stuck our bowling heavy line-up in for the first bite of another glorious Rummery deck (hats off to Guy for getting the ground into shape following the biblical weather events of Saturday). Keen to match power with prowess, Durtnell and CJ opened, with at least one of them getting the memo. Once CJ had fallen to a 30-ball duck, and Simmo had gift wrapped his wicket, Big Dave Gilmour came to the crease to stop the rot. Durtnell and Gilmour re-opened operation yew tree and the young bowling attack was ruthlessly punished. Big D finally fell for a season best 38 with Bourne to follow soon after. Durtnell continued to defy the doubters and plundered runs, aptly assisted by housewife’s favourite Jasper Piper, to drag the score up around the 150 mark. By then, usual NCC tail ender Reuben Collingwood had donned the apron and was serving up his usual selection of assorted pies, accounting for the final 5 NCC wickets. Top knocks from Piper, Durtnell and Gilmour took the NCC total to a competitive but vulnerable 165 all out.
The Chairman’s fixture always serves up more on the catering front that the cricket field, and we were once again treated to a Sloan special heavy on cakes, pastry and Birra Moretti!
The Chairman must have been quietly confident of reaching 166 within the allotted overs, but this was tempered slightly by a first over strike from talisman bowler Harry Bradney. Barney “the mouth” Hall also succumbed to Bradney’s guile, bringing Ben “big show” Browning to the crease. The importance of this scalp was driven home when ball after ball started to disappear into gardens, roof tiles and car parks. With the two batsmen well set our total was wilting rapidly, until a misjudged window breaker from Browning was spooned to safe hands CJ and it was game on. The next major obstacle Collingwood came to the crease with only 4 an over required for victory, but the combination of some tidy middle overs from Pipers, Simpson and CJ put the squeeze on. Gilmour was then summoned from the deep and after finding his radar, Collingwood misjudged a perfectly legitimate delivery and holed out to JP. After a well-deserved Rose induced snooze, the Chairman came to the crease needing to farm the strike and knock off the remaining 30 runs for victory. It wasn’t to be as Smith hoovered up the final wickets like a couple of teatime sausage rolls, and the game was won.
Thank you to the Chairman for his generosity both on and off the field with cricket most certainly the victor on this occasion.
