Played : 14 Won : 11 Lost : 3
Yesterday saw Newenden record another league victory, their fifth in a row, though it was not as regulation as the score may suggest.
Upon arrival, it was clear the track was going to play a key part in the day's proceedings and this certainly proved to be the case. Having lost the toss, we were put into bat. It did not start well, with both openers back in the hutch without troubling the scorers. We started to get flashbacks to the nightmare at Bishopsbourne, with the score at 11-2 from 5 overs, and the ball doing all sorts off the surface.
Bourne and Browning dug in, and had taken us through to 62, before Browning was bowled by a shooter for a decent 34. Bourne was showing immense composure at the crease, waiting on each ball and accumulating runs in the process. Edwards and Hills were both dismissed cheaply and we were suddenly at 80-5. This brought league debutant Barney Hall to the crease. He was told to be patient and play each ball on it's merits. This he did, by smashing his first ball out of the ground for six, then his second over mid wicket for four. This gave the innings a little impetus, and the score was up over 100 when he was dismissed.
Bourne was still holding things together and was joined by Finn Piper with the score at 119-6. Piper started to strike the ball nicely, and they built what proved to be a match-winning partnership. They had put on 80 before Bourne was out to a sharp caught and bowled for a valiant 68. A cracking knock in the circumstances. He will be missed as he goes off on his annual pilgrimage to the riviera for the new few weeks.
Piper continued until he was out to an exceptional catch at extra cover for a superb 44. The excitement was not over, as young Tom Hall (another league debutant) joined the party, by smashing a quickfire 20, which included two 4's and a towering 6 and there was even enough time for Smith to deposit the ball into a neighbouring house before we were all out for 222.
It was a superb counter attack and once again showed the beauty of having so much depth to our side.
We started well with the ball. Piper had his tail up and was bowling some good lines. He finally got one to dip in and trapped their skipper LBW, plumb in front. Smith was bowling his customary metronomic spell from the other end, and was to pick up a couple of wickets for his troubles, finishing up with 2-26 from his nine.
Edwards replaced Piper and he grew into a great spell of quick bowling. He proved to have far too much for the opposition batsmen and ripped through their middle order, clean bowling three of them. He finished up with 4-22 , superb figures on debut.
There was still time for young Tom Hall to join the attack and pick up a couple of wickets, one a unbelievable slip catch by Browning, that really tested his reaction speed. His brother Barney than mopped up the final wicket, with some decent finger spinning.
Little Chart were all out for 75.
It was a fun game that keeps us in the hunt for the division title. The next few weeks will decide where the trophy is going, so we need to stay focused on the job in hand.
