What a difference a week makes. A pretty healthy crowd enjoyed a fantastic game of cricket at the NCG yesterday. The match swung back and forth like a pendulum throughout the afternoon with Newenden finally taking a very tense affair by a very small margin.
Having lost the toss and being put in to bat, Newenden set about their business efficiently. After a tight first few overs, mainly down some decent quick bowling from Northiam, Newenden began to release the shackles and build what was to be a very decent platform for the innings. Morris started to strike the ball cleanly and Waterhouse was maintaining a healthy scoring rate too, which took us through to 112 before Morris went for 61, caught in the deep attempting one shot too many. The Newenden innings continued to build momentum, with the stoic Waterhouse refusing to give up his wicket cheaply, there were some useful cameos from Jasper Piper ( who special mention must go to for turning out yesterday under extreme pressure - thanks Jasper) and Reuben Collingwood. The scoreboard continued to tick over, and after Waterhouse finally fell for 68 in the 36th over, debutant Will Wotton smashed an eye catching 26 to take our total up to a very competitive 229.
After a wonderful tea from Joy Rummery, Northiam came out to bat. Young Angus Balfour bowled superbly, opening up from the top end, he had their openers in his back pocket, bowling wonderful lines at a pretty sharp pace. His six overs only went for a miserly 11 runs. Smith bowled with his usual consistency, with a tight opening spell from the Pavillion End. The breakthrough came after a mix up, and our run out specialist Jasper Piper did the rest. This brought their star batsmen to the crease and the balance of the game begun to change. He started to take on our bowling and quickly moved through to 50, and barring one tough chance for a caught behind, offered us very little. Their number four started to tuck in as well and suddenly our grip on the game started to slip. We shuffled our pack and tried a few new bowlers, but the result was the same. Then Collingwood came onto to bowl from the Pavillion End and things started to happen, he got the first breakthrough removing their big hitting number four, then started to dismiss the new batsmen at regular intervals. Their main man had now cruised through to his hundred and we knew if we could not get him out, we would lose the game. Finally he holed out to a wonderful catch by Will Wotton at Long On. We still had work to do, as they only needed 20 from the last 8 overs. The Northiam batsmen started to pick out our fielders and we all held our catches, with Harker taking a stunner at mid wicket, and George Jones taking a very sharp chance standing up behind the stumps. Finally with 8 runs needed and still three overs to bowl, their captain picked out the exceptional Jasper Piper in the deep and the match was won.
It was a great game of cricket, and one that was thoroughly enjoyable to play in. Once again we showed that we have the resilience to hang in there and turn games round.
Well done to all involved.
