Sunday saw Newenden snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, after what can only be called a topsy-turvy game.

Following the late withdrawal of Pett, JB managed to secure an eleventh hour game with Castle Hill. We had already beaten them earlier in the season, but it is always a competitive fixture.

Upon arrival at the ground, it definitely looked like the kind of track to bat on second, unfortunately we lost the toss and were put in. Things started badly, with Morris being bowled in the second over. Browning and Smith consolidated for a period, with Browning hitting some beautiful strokes, before Smith was caught for 19, with the score at 51-2. Browning went next over, followed shortly by Hill and Atherton. Newenden were now 65-5.

Wickets continued to fall and the returning Carr was the only one offering up any resistance. He was playing patiently, waiting to punish the bad ball. Simpson and Gilmour departed without troubling the scorer. Boland came in smashed a six then was bowled. Carr's resistance was finally broken when he was caught at slip for 32. Smith and Bradney knocked a few at the end, taking us up to 116 All Out, which looked at least 40 short of par.

As our innings finished early, we decided to go out for half an hour before tea. We knew early wickets were key and said lets try and take four before tea. This we did. Bradney and Smith had the batsmen is all kinds of trouble, ripping through their top order. At the tea break we had Castle Hill reeling at 10-4 from 7 overs.

After tea, we quickly took a fifth wicket, a great run out following some superb work by Simpson in the deep. This brought their captain to the crease, who has often played well against us in the past. He started to rebuild their innings assisted by their number six. They started to gradually play themselves in and grind away at the total. We mixed up the bowling but couldn't find the break through. Finally Boland trapped their number six LBW, but it proved to be too little too late. As their captain hit the winning runs after 38 overs.

It was a disappointing one to lose, but it was impressive to have made such a game of it after our effort with the bat.

The league resumes this weekend as we welcome Frittenden to the NCG.
