Different day, same result. Newenden continued to enhance their reputation as one of the leading Sunday sides in the area with a convincing win over a shell- shocked Crowhurst side.
Conditions were perfect at the NCG.The sun was shining brightly and there was hardly a cloud in the sky, so when Jonesy won the toss, it was a simple choice to bat first. Our innings started badly, losing Sloan to his recurring hamstring injury in the 3rd over and Morris following shortly afterwards. This brought Harker and the in-form Holder to the crease, they started to take on the Crowhurst attack, adding 45 for the second wicket before Harker fell for 33. Crowhurst were pretty pleased to have broken the partnership but unfortunately for them this only brought Rummery to the party. Feeling fresh after finishing his Saturday campaign last week, Rummery's sole focus is now Newenden, and this was patently clear from the start. Holder and Rummery put on 50 for the third wicket, before Holder went for 28. This did not slow momentum, as Rummery continued to bat with a disciplined aggression that was clearly taking the game away from Crowhurst. A cheeky little cameo from Jonesy in the final few overs, which saw a few lost balls, as well as few wet ones, took our total through to 228-5 from our allocated 40 overs.
Newenden took the field and you could sense that we wanted an early finish. Unfortunately the opening bat for Crowhurst had other ideas, smashing 55 from just 35 balls, putting us very much on the back foot. Smith showed real courage to finally get his man, with a fantastic catch taken by Bradney looking straight into the sun at deep square leg. The game then turned firmly back towards us. The introduction of Finn Piper, who is on one of the hottest of hot streaks, changed the game irreversibly in our favour. Bowling 8 overs on the bounce he ripped the heart out of the Crowhurst line-up finishing with figures of 4-26, which means he has aggregate figures of 11-41 for the last two games. Mention must go to Jonesy for taking a very sharp catch at silly-mid on to remove their dangerous number three.
Sam Piper came on to replace Smith from the Pavillion End, and bowled his usual aggressive and economic spell, picking up 2-26, which included a great catch by Rummery in the slips. Rummery came on at the top end to finish things off, picking up 2-12 from his 4 overs, and the final Crowhurst wicket fell when Harker clean bolwed their number eleven, leaving them 146 All Out.
This was another clinical performance, where our strength in depth once again came to the fore. With only two games remaining it would take a brave man to bet against us winning them both. We hope to see a few of you at our final home game on September 25th.
